Removing Recessed Lighting

I have no experience with this, but our 100 year old house has recessed lighting in the living room and a drywall ceiling. I'm wondering if removing the drywall and recessed lighting would add more ceiling height. How do I go about finding out what's above the drywall? Can I cut a hole in it and then replace it? Does anyone have any experience doing successfully removing this kind of ceiling? Our ceiling in the living room is only about 8' high, and even if I could only reclaim 4 inches I would consider it a success, as the low ceilings are my least favorite thing about the house. Thanks vey much for sharing your experience and experise.
