Finished kitchen reveal – 1987 to 2016
My kitchen has finally gone from 1987 to 2016. It made a few pit stops in the 2000’s, I’d
guess, when the previous, original owners updated the counters to Corian and
changed appliances. The previous kitchen
was approximately 12x12 with a single 4 ft. opening from the breakfast
room. It felt like the kitchen was a
total afterthought when the house was designed or it was intended for hired
help. Either way, it was the total
opposite of open concept. We opened up a
few walls and re-configured the space for a larger kitchen with walk in pantry
and smaller breakfast room. The formal LR is now the formal DR. The cooktop
in front of a window with no vent is gone, lighting is improved tremendously, and
a corner oven/microwave that encroached on the refrigerator is no more. We’re still working on some new furniture and
accessories but the big stuff is done.

Few lessons learned:
The overall project took MUCH longer than anyone thought it would, be
mindful of DW’s in the corner and handle clearance (have another brand new DW
in our garage to confirm this), shop for sinks before committing to a 33” sink base, and spend
more time on the lighting layout.
