Near the end of the season, I do remove any flowers/flower buds to allow the plant to put all its energy into ripening the fruit that has already set, rather than wasting some on fruits that will never have time to ripen before frost. Never though to just top the whole plant ... Good idea.

Having accidentally topped plants in the past, I found they root very, very easily. I overwintered in my little greenhouse a couple of cherry tomato plants started that way. Without supplemental lighting, production slowed to a halt, but then started up again once the days began to lengthen. As you can imagine, those cherry tomatoes never made it into the house ... always nice to have snacks on hand in the greenhouse :-)
