I bought hyacinth bulbs, now what...

I can't put them in ground here 3b-4a, nor can I keep them potted in my garage (-40° a couple of days in the winter, unheated garage).

In the end, I would like to add part of them to other bulb display containers (fall bulbs, that are buried in pots in the garden, until I take them out next Spring into nice cache-pots for my door) and part of them, directly in the ground to add to a Spring display (I would dig them out the following Fall - providing I'm told I can keep them).

As well as being able to keep them from year to year if possible...

Packed in the fridge until Spring ? In a cold room ? In potting mix ? In paper ? All winter ? Cold shock only when in dirt ? When do they come out, if in fridge... ? Also, If I want to try forcing one of them above water on my kitchen window, say in one of those glasses...

Please help if you know about hyacinths growing, saving and stocking where above 32° doesn't happen before mid-end of April.

I put mine in a paperbag and put in veggie drawer in frig. I also make sure no fruit is in there because it can kill the flower bud that is in the bulb. I take out after 12 to 15 weeks and pot up or plant outside.

If other fall planted bulbs survive outdoors when buried in the ground I see no reason why hyacinths wouldn't. They are no more tender than daffodils or tulips.

I can't help you on forcing for indoors because I always buy 'prepared' hyacinths which have already undergone whatever chilling process is needed. I am assuming that yours are not prepared?

maylingsmom - we don't know where you live - maybe in a warm winter place - but in vibis climate there's no need to put them in the fridge if they are going to be grown outside. I can't comment on forcing for indoors becasue I've never done it. I just buy prepared bulbs and place them in my cold shed.

floral_uk z.8/9 SW UK - no cold sheds here where I live. I am zone 8b about 150 miles from the Gulf coast. Last year we had very little winter weather so when I forced for bloom inside some went outdoors and came into bloom pretty quickly. I have lots that are already growing outside but just did it because I wanted to force for inside and had a few left over.
