Beth,

I'd recommend quartz or what is known as pure black granite. Quartz is extremely durable and easy to maintain - great for kitchens. Black granite is much less porous than traditional granite. But, both need sealing and re-sealing where Quartz never does. I'm in Milwaukee if you want to come and look at samples.
