What do you want to change? It is a very pretty kitchen. Is something not your style?

We need a lot more info , I see nothing wrong with this kitchen, for me all the wood would make me crazy but it really is nice.

Hi All! Thank you for your feedback! We have remodeled a great room that is right off the kitchen and now we need to update the kitchen, which is 18 years old, so it compliments the other room better. I would like to paint the cabinets and change the counters. The granite is quite busy even though from a distance in the pic the color is good.

How about a picture of the great room? That would give us a clue

Can you post a picture of the great room that you want to tie the kitchen to?

It sounds like your first step is to find a professional painter and get estimates. DIY cabinet painting is a difficult task and we recommend getting a professional to paint cabinets unless you are an experienced and patient DIY person. Regardless of who paints the cabinets, keep in mind that a painted finish will not be as durable as a factory finish. Many people are very happy with their painted cabinets too.

There are many countertops that look pretty with white cabinets. I suggest you look at lots of pictures on Houzz or other image search engines and see what grabs your interest. Also, visit Kitchen and Bath showrooms to see actual countertops, backsplash and hardware combinations.

Even though your kitchen is 18 years old, it looks quite nice as it is.

Remove the 4 inch backsplash and add tile that goes all around the window. Don't bring the b/s to the front end of the counter--stop on the back wall.

Granite looks solid so this calcutta gold herringbone might not work with a busy granite.

I'd do new countertops, new (maybe glass) tile backsplash, colorful rug. The cabinets look good. While I like painted cabinets too, it won't be as nice as a factory finish so maybe don't mess with that or maybe just paint the island. Install pendant lights over your island. Good luck

Thank you, SewingLadyDI. What color for the counter top?

Your current kitchen is beautiful. Wish mine looked that good. It flows fine with your great room from what I see.

Thank you, Snied! I was thinking of painting the cabinets a soft white and lighter counter.

I would not paint these white. They look to be in good shape. I would definitely replace the countertops and use a subway tile for the backs place (don't run your counter up that couple inches). This current kitchen looks to tie into the adjacent living space already.

I would paint the cabinets white, replace the countertop to a lighter one maybe light grey , and add beautiful lighting above the counter.

This is one of my favorites. I like the creamy white cabinets with the copper like counter on the island and the lighter counter under the cabinets. What do y'all think?

Another vote that your great room photo just emphasizes the harmony that already exists. Maybe counter, tile, pendants but I wouldn't do more than that. "Update" should be for a kitchen your grandma inherited, not one that's basically modern.

Thank you, acm! So you like my kitchen better for harmony than the one above, acm? If so, can you tell me why?

Also, acm, what would you do for the counters?

I would do thick looking white quartz.

I was actually thinking of you painting the cabinets dark since you like a more modern look.
