Before replacing it, clean it with acetone and see if that helps.

I agree replacing that busy backsplash is a good idea. With your dark wood cabinets and lovely counters, I'd put up a simple white (maybe beveled) subway tile. Consider glass subway tile for some added depth, but do it in white (or near white - which ever best matches the background in your counters). It will look great!

I can see why you want a change. Looks like a big area…how about simple subway tiles with your counter?

Judy it is Quartz. Does that make a difference?

I have found a few options the middle is marble, would that be ok with a quartz countertop? Your thoughts?

Don't go with the marble looking tile on the right. It wont look as nice as you would expect. I would go with an off white Subway tile or standard white subway tile. like this

A solid color, white or a very light shade of gray. You don't want to compete with the countertop which is lovely.

I wonder if a sander could help, though rough/distressing it?? I like the iced coffee caramel look. Not so bad.
