diningroom help

last modified: 9 years ago

I just bought this new dining room set and it definitely needs something..... Any suggestions? Should I get an area rug - if so what color? I was thinking of something for the walls maybe something for the hutch cut out area...Should I get some draperies for color?? (and yeah the fish has to go...) Oh, and which set up do you think looks best.. 3 chairs in a row (with the table piece..) or the 4 chairs at the table and 2 on the side... (I was trying to show the true color of the room - which was hard... looks mostly like the top photo and the bottom...) Anyways all advice most appreciated... (and yes the tags on the chairs will be removed tonight :)

Found these if you are thinking of a gallery?

goldenbird411 thanked Home Interiors with Ease

Well either a gallery or 2 or 3 larger prints.... ... I guess art is such a personal thing....

What are your thoughts on these... I picked up 3 today... they only come in 3 different flowers...So I was thinking of doing a series of 9 on my wall...(or maybe diagonally.. but would it look ok considering there are only 3 varieties.... basically what I have is what they have....

Or I could do these 3 only on my last remaining wall, the wall opposite to the mirror wall - and still work on the large wall...

I know I said I wanted color but I thought these were pretty... not sure what you think... the size of them are .... one tile is 13" x 13"

Or do you think they wouldnt work at all? Thoughts???

The opposite wall I am talking about

I think I would leave that wall empty...and wait and work on the large wall...

.I really like them...can they be used anywhere else in your home?

Well no not really... I can return them.... I just really liked them...

I love the tiles. Alas, they are too small, even if you did 9 of them. I think. I do like the grouping of red floral prints that Home Interiors found above. I don't think you really need color there, though.

So what if I buy the matching print to the one I have (the one I just bought) and move them together on the big wall... and put the tiles on the smaller wall where the print is now... It just kinda gets discouraging cause some of the things l like you dont and visa versa.... I guess because Home interiors was advising on the large metal wall decor (which was very nice but I did see a few photos online and without the lighting and the dark colored wall - I dont think you get that same effect) and Grover was advising on the gallery wall...(which I dont know which size prints to pick then now??) I sort of picked an inbetween... the photo gallery that Home interiors picked is 23.75" High x 17" length.... My ceiling height is only 8 feet high... So how do I know what size I am looking for without taking over the room or being too small....

And I know you guys are just trying to help me... but I have to love it... And I did love the tiles...

    Still looking for help?
Lose the fish on the wall.
Put all the little framed pictures together as one large photo grouping leaving a uniform distance between every picture, keeping the center of the arrangement at eye level. Start with one important picture at the center of the wall and work out from there...three rows should do it. Try out the full arrangement on the dining table first and adjust the frames for a nice composition.
An area rug will add color or pattern. The rug should measure four feet wider and four feet longer than the table measurements to allow for comfortably moving the chairs out and in for seating all around (2 feet on each of the four sides when centered).

Hey golden, first don't worry about what Home Interiors and I like. What YOU like is what's important.

It might be a good solution to put your print and its mate on the big wall and the tiles where the print currently is. The only issue there is that puts the tiles close to the mirror and might look too repetitive. Can you hang one of the tiles in place of the framed piece and let us see a photo of it and the mirror together?

... trick to enlarge your tiles if you love them? with paint or decal as a neutral or colorful backdrop...that's my idea.

Hi, I agree with everybody...................that is to say; pick the things that appeal to you! The problem with trying to get it "right" is that in doing so, you've lost an opportunity to build your own design-confidence. Inviting in so many opinions will bring excellent but differing points of view. Just my thinking here, but, Houzz is a platform many people use to get design direction but there's more to be gained. By trying some things, landing on the formula that makes you really happy and getting the job done, you can also build the confidence to keep experimenting.

Yes I sort of thought about that.. meaning the mirror and tiles (in a way sort of have the same look... metal...) But I dont understand then why HI wanted me to buy the metal art... wouldnt that sort of be the same thing... I guess standing in the room.. I Feel anyways that if I have too many Large things... it is going to make the room feel smaller.... Those tiles actually do look small in the photo.. but if you have 3 across diagonally for example its like 5 feet...

I know in the photo they dont look as big for some reason... so I took a photo of one with a normal coaster so you can sort of see the size...

And if I was going to put them on the wall with the picture I was thinking of mounting them like this...

And this is with the picture taken down... the wall painting behind the picture hasnt been done yet.. so you sorry, have to ignore that.. And the fact they are hanging on the pegs for the picture.. so not necessarily in the correct spot.

I mean... if you totally think they wont work.. I might as well take them back... but they do look alittle larger for some reason in real... and on the wall...

Thank you Jeffrey... Yeah, its just I saw these brought them home and really liked them... so you know that feeling when you buy something you like and they wont work... it was just a little disappointing is all.... sort of like the chandelier that HI picked and in the end it was too large... I was going to buy it and then looked at the size and the height of my ceiling... and it didnt work.. but it was STUNNING and I did LOVE it... but I will just wait until I find something I really LOVE... If I am going to put out a few hundred bucks... I want to love it... So for now the chandelier I have will do until I find that one I really really LOVE...

You can use art grouped in a way that becomes part of the architectural makeup of a room.

    Or as pure decoration........

Why don't those pieces you like work? Can you purchase more and build a larger composition? Or, look for some modern silver (or pewter) plates/trays?

Well I guess because they are too small for the large wall... Originally I was going to put a series of 6 or 9 of them on the large wall... I had that option or move the print buy the mate for it and put the 3 tiles on that wall where the print was... I was looking at the sizes of the prints Home interiors was choosing and hers were about 24 x 17.. something like that... these are 13 x 13... I have a 8 ft wall...... so that was my thought... not that I know what I am doing or anything... I definitely dont want to make it look crappy because of the things I like... especially if I am right off...

I have always liked glam like stuff...

I just realized something, goldenbird. I have been thinking that the large wall is further away from the mirror than the wall with the print. But the mirror is exactly in the center of the room, isn't it? If that's the case, then no matter which side the tiles were to go on, they'd be the same distance from the mirror and compete.

Also, please don't stagger tiles or art (unless you're going up a staircase wall). I still think a gallery of simple black frames all the same size with understated art--maybe black and white line drawings--will look best on the large wall. Of course, you could always put back the fish. (Just kidding.)

    last modified: 9 years ago

Ya no... the fish is gone out of the diningroom.. lol. And yes the mirror is in the exact center....

Grover... if you have a minute will you do me a favor and photoshop these prints into this photo... please and big thank you... Or do you think they are too close in color?

Here you go, golden. I like that they are fairly neutral, though I would probably prefer black and white. Still, I think they look good if they are somewhere close to this size (plus or minus).

Love the botanicals! Very nice..I think would be better with set of 8... unless these are bigger than what is shown?? Are they from Birch lane ?

    last modified: 9 years ago

No they are from Wayfair but currently out of stock... my luck... but they are expecting stock again... hopefully... otherwise I will keep looking... definitely not easy to find a SET ... I checked wayfair, overstock, amazon, ebay, looked around where I live... Lamp universe, urban barn, home outfitters.... Anyways... I did think the color of those botanicals went well.... so hopefully they will come back in stock...yeah and I do also think 2 more would be just perfect..

You could hang three of these..

Well I like the middle one... the tree.. but will this goldish color look ok with the (Silver) mirror? I also read on a few of the reviews that it is not as shiny as in the photo... more flat color... antiqued looking... Do you like the color though Home interiors... I was thinking with this item... if a dark color more like my table would be nice... My husband is a auto painter so he could easily spray it a darker brown... or even a shiny gold.. silver whatever.... (And the height is only 28 - will that look right on the wall? What do you think Grover?

Oh also... the 3 metal pieces you were thinking about there... they are only 14" width... they are only 1" larger than my tiles

Sorry, golden, but I am not a fan of any of the metal art. It all looks mass produced to me.

  • PRO

I think the metal tree would be simple and elegant..you can see what you think of the finish if not have your hubby paint it..I think the finish actually will look very pretty......yes the third long metal panels are 14" but the length was great so would cover more if the wall.

I found these and I think they are sold at a store locally to me so I can go by and have a look .... What do you think about these...

Goldenbird, I like those a lot. Do you know how large they are? By the scale of the books and vase, they look like they might not be large enough.

    goldenbird411 thanked groveraxle

So lets say the are not large enough width wise... I think if I put 2 - one on top of the other... they would be fine height wise... but could I put wall sconces or something on either side...??

I do love the metal tree idea..very light and softer look for your space...these black frames will be a much stronger look...but very pretty too! Check out the prices and see if worth it or not..keep me posted

These are WAY superior to the metal tree. If these look as good in person as they do here, I'd get them. I've hung them really close like they show in the online photo, but you could space them out a little more, like the ones Home Interiors shows above. (Don't space them too much, though; you want them to read as a unit.)

    These look super classy.

Would you just do me one last favor Grover... I know you have gone the distance for me as it is with all your photo shopping skills... I will most definitely have to purchase that... anyways would you - (if its not too much trouble)... put in the the 2 larger prints I chose... the darker (the money tree) ones and the larger botanicals...I am going to choose between the 3 of these...(I am just alittle worried the 6 together are a bit small....

    last modified: 9 years ago

Home interiors.. I did actually see those prints you have in person and they are really nice... they are actually pretty large... they look lovely in your home.. but I am more botonical/greenery.... sort of person :) Unfortunately they didnt have any of the others for me to see ...

I love your carpet in the entry way too!

    last modified: 9 years ago

Also... do you think once you have the 6 on the wall... do you think they might look too yellow? I am almost leaning toward the larger prints... maybe the leaves... mainly because I am not sure of the other prints (being yellow)

BTW, don't go by the color in my renderings. It's impossible to tell what the light in your room will do to them. Look at them in person, take them home with the option to return if possible.

Wow its hard to decide... I like them all really.... but I am scared color wise...

I cant buy them and take them home and then return them.... there is no where here locally that sell them... there was one store I found that can order them in just like I can... and she told me it would be a 50% return cost... so forget that... I might as well order it myself... oh... "I" would also put a bit more of a divide inbetween the prints.. I just like it better that way... otherwise I might as well buy ONE print... which one do you prefer HIWE... or do you like them all?

Oh and THANK YOU VERY MUCH Grover for all your time and expertise on the photo shopping skills !!

justelizabeth... thank you, but I am Canadian so we do not have a Kohl's out here...there are a few retailers in my area that sell this brand of prints but they have to order them in just like I would... so I guess I might as well take my chances and order one of the 3 I am deciding on... I really like them all...hard decision...

I have read the whole thread, super advice and great looking dining room..nice outcome. Can I make one suggestion, why not original art? something that speaks to you and your husband? More personal. I think sometimes you need to personalize your home, not pull it out of a box.

You know the hardest part for me here IS THIS... I have NO idea what
size art I am looking for - for the size of my wall.... What will LOOK BEST... one piece, 2 pieces.... 8 pieces... I am NOT ONLY
worried about the color maybe clashing with my paint color (buying
online makes it tough for that) and secondly I do not want a piece that
looks too small or too overwhelming for the space... I found kind of an
    interesting site...
    http://www.natalieblakestudios.com/2014/05/23/what-size-should-my-artwork-be/
If I JUST KNEW the size I should be looking for that would definitely
help... I should of decorated the large wall first as that I think is
the hardest... (and that space was the one I was worried about the most)...but as per the above site - it says... my wall... 135"
length x .57 = 76"... so it says I should have 76" of art on the wall.
(at least this is what this site is telling me...
I really did love those tiles I bought.. and I Should of flippin hung
them on the wall in a series to see if "I" truly liked the them... but my husband wasnt lovin them either... Not that it matters,
the fish for was there for long enough....I am trying my best to make this room look
perfect and it isnt easy... when you dont know what will be right for
    the space....

I mean its one thing to go to the store and pick something up and if it
looks like crap - I can return it... but it isnt so easy online - I would hate to pay 300 - 500 and it gets here and the color clashes .... If
I REALLY love something at this point I will pay whatever for it... so I
can just get this wrapped up...

I apologize for changing my mind and
being so indecisive but when you dont know what is going to look good
AND THE RIGHT SIZE....it makes it kinda hard.

Anyways, thank you to everyone who has given advice... good and
bad...and honest.... And putting up with me... And especially Grover and Home interiors!
I will figure this out somehow! Take care...

Keep in mind you can cover up to 3 quarters of the wall space width...so one large piece...sets of 6-9.... 3 piece....anything goes if cover a good portion of the width.

Goldenbird, you CAN cover up to 3/4 of the wall space, but you also don't have to cover that much. Try this: find some art you like and cut templates from newspaper or butcher paper to that size and tape them up. You'll be able to tell if it's way too large or way too small. If you're not sure, post a photo of the templates here and we'll tell you if they don't look right.
