I would need a picture to give a more accurate answer, but I have granite countertops. Here is a picture of a corner. (you get the idea) Granite is easy to clean.

Is the floor actually marble or is it marble look porcelain tile?

I think you should consider quartz for the perimeter at least. Have you looked at any quartz?

After looking at your idea books I think it might be helpful to see your kitchen, is a photo possible?

This is the best I could do. Since the work is still in progress I am not able to give you a better picture.

I think a light colored granite like in the comment above would look good.

I definitely like veined granite more than speckled. Oh and we changed our minds on the floor. We are now going with solid crema tiles. No more changes as the tiles have been laid yesterday. What color veined granite do you think goes well with the cabinets and the floor ? Like I said before we are open to do different color on the island and counters.
