Most likely culprit is stink bug damage.

Hi gorbelly, not quite sure what a stink bug is, This gal lives on the eastern seaboard, I'll run that by them. Do they attack the fruit, as there does't appear to be surface damage to fruit.

The mid-Atlantic states are ground zero for the invasive brown marmorated stinkbug, which has spread all over the eastern seaboard and to many midwestern states and has appeared in some western states. Late summer/early fall is prime season for them where I am, though they get to work much earlier in warmer areas. There are many different species of stinkbug, although the native ones are not as destructive overall. Stinkbugs attack many different parts of plants, but BMSBs are especially notorious for ruining fruits.

Damage can take different forms depending on the maturity of the fruit, the maturity of the bug, and the numbers of bugs, but there is a specific kind, made up of gold flecks or spots on the surface of fruit and white, spongy areas just underneath the skin, which is so common that it has its own name, cloudy spot of tomato. On the surface, cloudy spot can look like gold flecks, like gold patches, quartz-like or marbled, or look like misty gold spots,, Stinkbugs are sucking bugs and pierce the fruit with long, needle-like mouth parts to feed, so they don't create signs of chewing.

Anyone with experience growing any fruited crop on the eastern seaboard will know the BMSB, and experienced tomato growers are quite familiar with the types of damage they cause on tomato fruit. Beginner growers inevitably learn about them quickly.
