You need to specify what this room is going to serve and the layout of furniture. It's anyone's guess. I see an AC unit that's going to be up on the left wall. I don't understand whether the two holes in the wall are window placements, and to where does it look out to?
The reason it looks sterile like an office space is because there are too many stark daylight lights with a soft cream/beige wall paint. You need not only ambient light which is given off by the recessed lights but a combination of accent and task lighting and varying the heights of the light source.

Make sure these lights are on dimmers - then you have maximum flexibility. Ceiling lights in a living room are rarely flattering, nor are they the best for task or reading lighting. Much better is a table lamp or wall sconce in each corner at chest height. Lighting actually has a lot of influence on the atmosphere of a room.

Love our recessed lighting. Often only turn them on dim with chandelier and have to have lamps in a room. Love the combination of lighting. It makes or breaks a room.
