What was used for the clear coat?

If the metal continues to rust do you think it will eventually start chipping the clear coat off? I love the rust look and wish it could be preserved!

Our painter used a lacquer but he did clean the rebar first. If you are using it outside - a polyurethane it what you need to use.

On the two jobs that we used rebar - the homeowners wanted the rust look. However I know that steel wool will do the trick if you want a cleaner look.
