need ideas for backsplash

I have painted my kitchen cabinets in dover white, a soft off white. the countertops are black soapstone. I cannot decide what to do for a backsplash. I really wanted carrera marble subway with a herringbone pattern over the stove, but I am worried that the stark white and grey of carrera, will not work with the off white of the cabinets. Any ideas?

Sorry, no ideas for you yet, but following because Dover White is the color of my trim. For what it's worth, I love the soft white and have been very happy with it. :)

No way to know with out picking up some tile samples and putting them in your kitchen in your light with your cabinets and granite . Light makes a world of difference . You can always return the samples you don't want . Tones are hard to tell just looking at tile in the store . And monitors all render colors very differently .

I had to google all the colors..the screen often shows them different than they are IRL..but from what I saw-I think your worry is well-based. The Carrera might be too stark. It seems "cleaner", cooler color to me, in comparison to your cabinets..might be wrong of course, but that's my impression. And maybe a bit too busy-given you'll go for quite gorgeous countertop.

I'd go for a quieter, maybe ceramic subway (handmade if possible and within a budget..to have this very subtle variety with it, which seems to be a good neighbor for a material like soapstone), and you can still have a herringbone accent pattern over the stove.

(and of course ravencajun is absolutely right, about the samples..you should see everything in your space and your own light. Even if a hundred people here tell you you're right or a hundred tell you you're not..they still don't stand in your kitchen, and don't see what's going on, like you will see it)

You should consider either the "Carrara Gray" or the "Touch of Gray" from California Art Tile - http://www.mexicanhandcraftedtile.com/ - I got samples of both and they are very, very similar - arguably one is a touch bluer than the other - but they are basically light grayish/green - but because they are hand-crafted tiles, there's a good amount of variation from tile to tile - so some are gray with a bit of green, some are gray with darker gray around edge, some are green with gray, etc. I used them in my kitchen (3x6 subway but they make many shapes) with soapstone counters and cherry cabinets and a wood floor and they are gorgeous! Very warm while still cool.
