My sans got poorly!

Got a bit of a shock the other day. A leaf (well stem or whatever theyre called ) was flopping over the edge of the pot. I thought it had just got caught by the new blind we had fitted. But then another went limp. I pulled it out and the end was black and wet. Strange I thought as it hadn't been watered that much and its on a sunny windowsill (it does get hot in there during summer but a window would be open)

Anyway a total of 3 leaf tubes have pulled, all looking rotten. Turns out the pot holder I'd put the pot in had some standing water. Even tho the top of the soil is dry, down below it must be a different story!

The remaining leaf tube stems look fine, solid so hopefully I've caught it in time. Question. To propagate those stem leaf tube parts that I pulled out. Do I cut off the rotten section and allow the cut to heal then plant up, like I would when propagating succulents?

Try to keep warm and dry. Cut to fresh stock and let callus maybe even a week before planting in the above gritty mix. Works for me. Sounds like you known what your doing. Good luck.

Sounds like you have a plan - I'd give it a shot. And try gritty mix next time.

Really? I doesn't look like it in the pics, but its hard to see. Here is my fernwood in Gritty Mix. I pretty much use solely gritty mix & terra cotta. I have to water constantly, but its worth it for the root-happiness.

Rot is a funny thing. Some times it just spreads all over once it gets a start. Lost a few myself. I also use sulfur dust now. The stuff sold for acid loving plants in Big Box Stores. Sans likes it on the acid side. I think from 5.5 to 7.5 with 7 being neutral. So there is room for error. Rot (fungus) loves it on the high side of the scale. That's why farmers use lime in compost to speed up the composting (rotting).

I sometimes use hydrogen peroxide: kills mold/fungus and provides oxygen. Haven't tried it on a sans yet.

I have heard of this before and used it as well as cinnamon and never had any luck with them. I have heard of peroxide deluded for rooting sans. Sulfur works as well as Bonide (brand) 'Captan'. Had lots of luck with them.
