I guess I should be thankful. The only two places I have dug recently were in a perennial bed, putting in some meadow sage plants, and up in our woods, planting a handful of spruce seedlings. In both cases the ground was quite moist.

However, yesterday we were replacing an old fence along our northern boundary through what is normally a swampy area. Any other year we would have been slogging through water up past our ankles in places. This year it was so dry that we didn't even need waterproof boots. It made the work much easier, but was deeply disturbing to see.

Under my mulched areas the soil is still in great condition. In my unmulched areas it is in need of some serious care. Thankfully the lack of rain seems to of left with the start of fall.
