I've done this so many times and each time I do...well let's just say I let loose a whole bunch of colorful expletives!!!

If it's just the bulb and no basal plate, let it dry out and apply some sulpher powder or believe it or not cinnamon powder as an anti-fungal. If you did get part of the basal plate, you can try twin scaling that piece and maybe get some bulblets out of the ordeal.

Yes, it should be OK, just follow Fred's advice! You will surely get some offsets out of it!!

You probably will. A lot of times when the scales are calloused over (on the main bulb), bulblets will develop in between them.

When a friend and I separated a HUGE cement pot of H. Papilio (there were nearly 70 bulbs in the pot), we sliced some bulbs clear in half. Dusted them with cinnamon and they did great. Friend said they bloomed last year.
