Looking good Josh. Salvaging that redwood decking was a great idea, and your greenhouse will look great with the hunter green paint. That is the color we painted our recycled greenhouse, it blends in, and we get a lot of compliments on it. Thank you for the step by step pictures. .. I look forward to seeing the finished project with your citrus babies all tucked away inside..

This greenhouse is just a little 8 x 8 structure. But I made the platform a bit bigger so I'd have some room to work with. The front deck was replaced with redwood, but the rails are now black iron with a redwood top rail. I did the demo on the old deck, but had a family friend put the new deck on. Let me see if I have a pic...This is before the deck was stained/sealed.

Hey, Mike! This morning I went and bought some bags of bark ;-)

Now I'm assembling the greenhouse...just came inside for a cool drink. It's already 80F out, although a bit overcast and hazy.

I got the frame assembled, and even slipped in a few of the clear panels.

The greenhouse will be better with the aluminum painted. I am glad you didn't get caught with your pants down on this one.

In my area I would have so many hoops to jump through it would cost me well in to the upper single digit $1000's All I can do is lean used windows against my house un-attached the get removed in spring.

I'm at school now....logging in during my prep period. I can't wait to do some more assembly work once I'm home. I'm almost to the point where I'll begin bolting things in place.

Mike, yeah, I couldn't sleep, so I got up for about an hour, then went back to bed around 4:30am. Not sure why I was restless.

Oh, and I took the pic from my back deck...that's why it looks so high up.

In this HOA, you have to submit plans for everything. They even regulate the color of tarps we can use. Any tree you want removed, also requires approval.

Josh, I had a night like that last night too. I don't get it..Now, I am very tired and I will still be heading to the gym when I am out of here at 8 to workout till 10 p.m. Then I will be up at 430 to do it all over again..You know, I am almost tempted to paint mine that color too. I love how it looks so natural, like part of your landscape. What color pain again and where did you get it? What type of paint?

It's coming a long great buddy. I can't wait until it's done. I thought that shot was taken from a drone! I love that view from your house..You know, I saw the pics of the jades and thanked you for them. I can't believe they are all flowering. Now if you got a variegated hobbit of the lengolis to flower, I would drop!

Mike, I'm closing in on the final stretch. I just need to get the vent installed...but one side still needs to be painted. Then the clear panels on one wall and the roof finished; and, finally, attaching the door. My only misgiving is the incredibly flimsy nature of the clear panels.....but, you get what you pay for!

8 foot by 8 Foot is fine. It will do a lot more than no GH. Unlike me your trees can go in when the first frost or damaging cold comes. Your frost will come as much as 2 months later than mine will. We alway know when the first killing cold comes and we put our trees in. We don't know when the last killing cold come so we can take out trees out. You can over crowd for a couple of months. Someone like me is in for a minimum of 6 months. People farther north are looking at 8 months and they are the ones needing these bigger GH's.

Josh, I wish I had painted the frame on mines back then..I was looking at mine this morning and I imagined it green..It would of looked so much better in a smaller yard than aluminum...

these HOA's aren' alway bad. I don't have an HOA and there are junked cars, abandon unsecured houses with tall grasses, weeds and trees that don't belong. We have gunfire and up to 4 murders in a years span. Our neighborhood has drug dealing prostitution and small amounts of human trafficking. All this occurs in an area with less than 250 houses. I need an HOA to band these businesses and practices so we can clean up our area.

I got the roof completely finished, just in time for the rain! It's still raining heavily. We're expecting 2 - 4 inches.

Steve, even here we have a big Meth problem....in fact, a garage exploded and burned the house down about a month and a half ago. Meth lab's and theft go hand in hand. I do appreciate the yard clearing enforcement, though, since we have wildfire threats all the time.

Mike, it's definitely easier to paint before the whole thing is built! Maybe you could tape off certain parts of yours and work on it a little at a time. Mine took about 8 cans of spray paint.

Laura, I did order it. I ordered through Target online, and got a decent deal on shipping.

And I just now finished the door.
The automatic vent is working well...it opens at 70F, and then closes once the temperatures drop. I have two final braces to put on the inside, and then I'm done....well, until I cut the access for the power cord....and begin to think about a shade-cloth system.

So nice looking! Waiting to see when the plants go in.

With a chance of snow later this week, I had to get movin' on winterizing the greenhouse. I have a small heater on a timer for overnight lows, and I've loaded the greenhouse with waterjugs from 1 to 5 gallons. This weekend, I wrapped the entire greenhouse in thick plastic sheeting. I also pulled the Moro blood orange inside after we hit 29°F a few nights ago. I temporarily disconnected the automatic vent opener, until I have time to cut the requisite slits in the plastic.

We are expecting a little snow here in Mass. tomorrow. I decided I needed a break today and did not cover my GH with the pool cover and watched the Patriots play instead. Now I see that it will rain or snow on the only day I will have a chance to do it! Oh well.

Laura, this greenhouse is pretty thin. It would take a heater and secondary measures to keep everything above freezing on those cold nights....but I guess that's how it is for most folks. I somehow thought the enclosure alone would keep the temp's up, but I was wrong.

Vladimir, you deserve a break! Besides, I figure a layer of snow will actually insulate the greenhouse and help regulate temp's!

Vladimir You will find that the snow works wonders for insulating the close to horizontal surfaces. It made a big difference in my unheated GH

Not sure if you have or not but, I would stuff underneath that platform with insulation material.

Josh, you just make my day when you follow through with the posts that you start from beginning to end..Thank you for sharing your wonderful ideas and nice pics..I hope you have much fun with that house this winter. I see your temps are going to be MUCH colder than last year and your next ten days shows much cold nights. Wow, maybe I will be lucky and get the reverse here for a change buddy!

By the way, I got about 2-3 inches and it has now all melt away..I have yet to see my Roses go dormant so I can cover them. Hopefully this week coming!

Steve you are right. When I got feet of snow and then below 0 weather right after, my greenhouse stayed nice and cozy and warm without much effort until it all melted away. Now I will deliberately pile snow along all sides of my greenhouse after a nice snow storm!

I was putting a lot of snow on my GH 2 years ago and at the base of the south wall. This year I have only half the glass surface area but have the same solar footprint and all my surfaces will be 2 layers of glass with 2 layers of bubble wrap. Heat will not be needed unless the temps fall colder -5F or I get sustained temperatures around 0F.

Hey, Mike! I certainly like to follow up on projects.

Already the plastic sheeting has given me an extra 10 degrees of warmth. Last night the temps stayed above 48F in the greenhouse, which is really great.

Ryan, I have not stuffed anything under the platform. There isn't any access to it, either. I've been toying with the idea, though, of sheeting the inside floor with plastic, and possibly adding a layer of bark mulch per Mike's suggestion....but I don't need the humidity necessarily.
