Grocery store hippie kit (maybe Candy Floss)

I'm new to hippies, and have been keeping an eye out for them at the local stores, while awaiting my first order online to arrive. Today I saw these rather seductive kits in the flower section of a nearby grocery store. The kits cost $5.35 and show I believe the following cultivars: Candy Floss, Clown, Red Lion (maybe), and Matterhorn (maybe). This one is Candy Floss, which I think is lovely. The bulb, 25 cm, seems healthy to my untrained eyes. Taking advice from Emaryllis and other websites, I'm soaking the roots now and will pot it in a proper soil mixture in a small terracotta pot. Wish me luck. If this turns out to be Candy Floss, then I'd be quite happy indeed!

BTW, the company is TotallyGreen Holland from the Netherlands. This kit was packed from "cultivated stock" for export to Canada. No other info, such as cultivar name, or planting instruction.

The kit that I posted above has finally bloomed, after just over four months. The bulb looks super healthy and so do the two flower scapes. And although it's not the same flower as advertised, it's somewhat similar and beautiful. The color is hard to describe - a peachy reddish orange, with a faint white star and a distinct pink blush down the middle of the petals.

Can this be identified? Emaryllis's picture and description of "Amigo" seem to fit it pretty well. Would you hazard a guess?

Whatever the case, this is the amaryllis that got me started and I love that it's doing so well!

Exciting! I noticed Lowe's had Hippeastrum out today, I picked up another of what I hope was their "Appleblossom" from last year.

Both the Lowe's and Home Depot near me have really healthy looking bulbs of Apple Blossom, Minerva, and Red Lion. So tempting. Too bad everything I've read indicates that you don't always or even often get the advertised variety with these box store bulbs. Still, it's exciting to see what'll come up!

I am also waiting for my bulbs to arrive mail order but I did pick up a Minerva and a white amaryllis at lowes this past week

I have a whole pile of bulbs coming in the mail, and have so far managed to resist getting any boxed kits at the store. It helps that all I've seen so far is the big 3 (Red Lion, Apple Blossom, Minerva).

Must... Resist...

Hi T. Tran,

The closest I can come to is Desire. Here is mine from 2011 and although yours appears to be darker in color which may be due to your office lighting, they both have those lavender midribs. See what you think.

They're both very pretty and at least you have beautiful bright blooms to look at. I get so tempted to buy one of those boxed bulbs at Home Depot, Lowes or any garden center...then something in my head says "Don't be a moron, remember last time?" then I talk myself out of it.

Your Desire looks so beautiful that I get tempted to order one right now! It looks more colorful than in the commercial pictures. But no, I won't!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well, just remember this was taken in 2011 and it came to me as a mislabel so I can't be 100% sure that it was Desire but I believe I sort of backed it in from this forum. They both might be something else but I was confident at the time this was Desire. It has since gone to hippy heaven.....

Donna, for 'Desire' I'm finding pictures of a much more orange flower, without the distinct star and pink flush. The pictures of 'Amigo' match much better. Whatever the case, yours and mine do look like the same flower.

I bought several grocery or box store kits this winter. This is by far the best all. All are mislabeled!
