Glorious here in central NH.

Still spotty here in SE NH, but colors are lovely so far.

Not much color yet along the coast in extreme So. Maine. On our tree lined street the large maples are still green. Because of the drought, many tree leaves are just drying up and dropping.

Thanks, Sped, for the photos. I thought about your comment that that the colors aren't as pretty as last year. That's what we noticed, too, in our area as the trees have started to turn .... there seems to be more orange than red.

We were up at Sunday River, ME over the long weekend and the colors were full peak. They were lovely, but I do agree that they are more of a rusty color than the deep red and maroon I am used to seeing. Not much color here on Cape Ann just north of Boston. We don't tend to have full peak until Halloween.

Spedigrees, while in York, take a trip up to Mt. A. (mount Agamentigus) if your schedule allows. Spectacular views far as the eye can see.

We were up in North Conway yesterday. It's slightly past peak with some lovely colors. Here near NHBabs, we have some trees that are still developing color and some in full glory. I've seen some nice stands of bright red sumac. My husband thinks this is the prettiest year yet but I think it's just as good as ever although slightly later. We did not have the usual light frost around 9/18 but had one a few days ago but not cold enough to hit the tomato plant growing next to the house.

If you came as far north as Concord NH and went to Gould Hill orchard, there's a pretty nice view from their small parking lot in front of the barn. I'm probably heading to Apple Hill in Concord pretty soon to get a mixed bag of baking apples. They, like Gould Hill, grow a wide variety of apples. I discovered Caville de Blanc last year. But even tiny Richardson's Farm in Boscawen has crates of apples out with some unusual varieties. (Plus they make great ice cream.)

Defrost, looking for apples is actually one of the things we wanted to do on our road trip. We won't be able to go until next week and so will probably aim for lower state VT/NH or northern MA.

Thank you for the suggestion, NancyLouise. I believe that the trails on Mtn Agamentigus were where I walked my dogs a decade or so ago when we rented a house on the beach for a week. The beach is closed to dogs during the daytime hours, so they and I went to Mt A during the days to walk. It was very nice up there. I learned to time our walks so that the trails, which were also open to mountain bikes, were virtually deserted during school hours.

Back then I was younger and able to walk further than now, and the 2 dogs we had back then were also young and good around people. Now the successors of those dogs are an older dog who would never make it down or up the concrete steps to the beach, and a young one who is frightened of people she does not know, so they're not great candidates for vacationing companions. They stay home when we visit Maine, and we just stay at a (non pet friendly) hotel on the water when we go to the beach for several days.

Also we are both older now and a short walk is all we can do these days, so we prefer to walk on the beach. We have nice wooded trails here in Vermont, but no ocean, so the beach wins out, no contest!

Maybe we'll take a car ride up to Mt A though. I remember it in a very good light!

Even though it is past peak in the Concord NH area there are still many beautiful colors. Some trees are bare but there's still some gorgeous individual trees and groups. Lawns and hayfields have greened up a lot with recent rains. Frankly, I'm surprised color has been so great this year. In early September I would have told anyone with travel plans to see the leaves to stay home. Past peak means the lawn is getting covered with leaves. We have maples. Last night when the grandchildren arrived for family dinner, they literally exploded out of the car hollering that they wanted to play in the leaves. The oldest, 12 yo, made a nest for herself and layed down to read a book. The 9 yo and 4 yo with grandpa's help, raked the biggest pile they could so they could jump in or bury themselves to pop out and scare grandma. I'm glad our grandchildren are country bumpkins.

I spoke too soon about the colors being at peak levels here. Actually the peak arrived about 4 days ago, and it surpassed or equaled the colors of last fall. Peak color came late this year! I didn't get a single picture, but the drive from Vermont to Maine was absolutely glorious, and the drive back home only slightly less spectacular! Now the falling of the leaves is under way, but there are still a lot of almost florescent reds and golds on the lower branches of the maples.
