Winter care for a potted JM in MI

HI there!
I gave my sister a 6 year old 'Orangeola' for her new garden in Michigan. This baby has been potted its entire life. Which is neither here nor there.

How should she best overwinter it? I can't shell shock her with root pruning and putting it into the ground, even though that would most likely be most sensible.

I'm not going back up there until December, which would also be insane.

Is it better for her to dig a hole and put the pot in it, mulching heavily?
Or putting it into the garage with lots of insulation around it?

Thanks!
