Runner size/placement

I'm stymied. We are renovating our kitchen; the countertops are in and with a thousand things left to do, I am obsessing about a rather small "thing".......I want to buy a wide (3") runner to place between the sink area and the island. But........the island is not square with the sink area.
The island is 60" long.
Would you place the runner centered on the sink/counter side, or the island side? Or would you buy a runner long enough to cover the floor from the dishwasher to the kitty-corner edge of the island?
