Earlier this year I started working from home full time. At my precious job when I would work from home I would find myself standing in the kitchen at the counter, so I knew I wanted a standing desk for my new job. Looked online at multiple options, but they were all super pricey and had no storage for all my office supplies. I located a few IKEA hacks, but they weren't exactly what I was looking for. At this point my husband thought I was crazy and being too picky. He told me to get a regular desk and sit like everyone else at an office. I didn't want to do that and knew with parts from IKEA I could make what I wanted.

This design might not work for everyone due to different heights, but it is the perfect height for me at 5' 7" and still really comfortable for my husband at 6' 1". When I stand my wrists are straight and how they are supposed to be when you type.

First I designed what I wanted on graph paper. My artistic talent is almost nonexistent, but this allowed my husband to picture what I was thinking in my head. (Final product did not have extra brackets under monitor shelf. I didn't need the extra height. So I have those saved for another project in the future.)

I ordered all the parts from IKEA. Yes, shipping was $100, but if I went into the store I know I would have spent more than $100 in extras that were not on my desk shopping list. Plus when they deliver they will carry everything into the house for you. I thought that was a good bonus! Normally I have to lug the stuff into the house.

I ordered the following parts, plus a few extras. Drawers, enclosed cabinets, a couple chairs (nothing to do with desk project), fancy colored lights (not required but looked cool), drawer organizers, etc.

- 2 Kallax 4 cube shelf units

- 4 kallax drawer inserts

- 4 kallax cabinet inserts

- 4 sets of kallax wheel sets (enough to have 8 wheels so desk could roll across floor if unneeded to move)

- 4 packs of capita brackets

- Ekby Alex shelf

- Linnmon table top

- A couple "L" brackets from local hardware store

- Originally I put on a Gerton leg worried I needed extra support, but took out because it was sturdy enough.

- I picked up small filing cabinet for printer and files. I have lots and lots of paper.

I assembled everything. Final product is pretty great. Know that the table top is hollow, but even with that I was able to attach no problems and haven't noticed any stability issues 9 months later. The top is slightly smaller than the Kallax cabinets, so I lined it up with the front. Also I set the Alex drawer shelf forward to mount with my "L" brackets. This gave me a place to lay all the cords.

I purchased a drafting table chair, so if I want to sit I can. I also purchase 2 large pieces of cork board and a fatigue mat, glued it all together with gorilla glue epoxy and wood glue. The extra epoxy was probably overkill, but mat hasn't separated. The fatigue may really does help.

Overall cost me under $650 to set up a really nice office.
