I think the light blue table you suggested would look good there, with artwork above. Just because your house is a craftsman style doesn't mean all the furniture has to be. You just need a table or chest that is wider than the dark chest you tried there. Also look at antiques shops where you can sometimes find more narrow pieces. I do think a dark wood finish looks nice against your wainscoting.

six keys I think the last picture you posted as "less practical " is the look I would go for thinking it is beautiful and really is more practical. you have a place to sit or drop things inside the door. the picture looks like your staircase. look for a narrow upholstered bench or an old "conversation" bench that incorporates a table with seating (old telephone table popular 30's-60s) place a mirror instead of a picture. this is mine in the kitchen inside my back door - measures 36'WX29"HX20"D

Thank you all for your input! I love all of those ideas (maybe that is the problem!). I found this cute desk on Craigslist. What do you think? The dimensions fit. I only hesitate because it adds another brown wood item to the area. Other than that I do like it alot.

I like it a lot to! I'd buy it in a second! I like the contrast the wood has against the white wainscoting while wrapping the staircase around that corner. bring in color with the accessaries you choose. you may also find a small ottoman or stool to tuck under it. love the hunt! the perfect solution is not always found in stores.

SCORE! The wood is dark…like that in your stye of house. You can add a small chair (I like a chair or bench in the hall for the convenience). I don’t see a wall plug, but it may be under #2. A lamp (on a timer) would help.

I got it! I think it is a tiny bit big (seller mis-measured).....but I think it works! I plan to get an upholstered small bench for underneath, a lamp, a framed photo, and art on the wall.
