Do they get direct light?

The smaller ones get very good light. The ones hanging also get some sun.

Shirley when I was in Miami for the WOC some years back, we visited several nurseries when we had time. My friends and I were surprised to see very large vandas in clay pots,they had all attached to the pots. My friends and I have since scattered and the gal in Dallas still talks about the possibility of growing this way. I've never pushed myself to grow them and only have a very few plants. Maybe I need to try again. I now have a greenhouse and have four small seedling plants. You'll have to keep us updated on their progress.

And I thought I was doing something original. New for me though and I will post again at a later date.

Did you have to stabilize the young plants in the pots? My four babies are going into clay and one that is bloom size too.

vandas and other orchids will grow in any media that gives the plant what it needs to grow. I have grown vandas just attached to a wire for support (no media at all) and they developed 6-8 ft long roots sytems over the years and massive specimen size. As long as the plant gets enough water, humidity, air movement,sunlight and fertilizer it will do fine. I believe that RF orchids in Homestead and possibly Banjong orchids have some of their vandas in empty clay pots. BTW keep checking the white stuff buildup on the clay pots, eventually roots will not stick to pots because of it. The white stuff is calcium and or fertilizer salts buildup

Thanks for the tip. I will keep check on the white stuff. I tried growing vandas in bark but the roots rotted. I don,t like the hangy down roots because of where I grown them but might still have to deal with that to some extent at a later date.
