Winterizer Questions

I assume many have different opinions on this so please feel free to share them all, the more input the better. I have cool season grass and live in Iowa.

Ok so I am prepping for my winterization run and stopped by SiteOne to get a 50lb bag of Lesco 32-0-8 for use as my winterizer. The bag would be good enough for 16k sq ft, but I only have 10k of lawn. I was thinking of a few solutions to this and have come up with 4 possible ideas. Feel free to let me know which if any of these are a good or bad idea:

  1. Wait until I would normally apply the winterizer (mid November after grass has stopped growing) and apply the full bag (which would be about 1.6 lbs nitrogen per 1k sq ft)
  2. Apply 1/3 the bag now and then the rest of the bag at the normal correct rate about 4 weeks later
  3. Apply half the bag now and then wait about 4 weeks and apply the second half.
  4. Apply half the bag the normal time and just save the second half for next year.

Thanks in advance!
