last modified: 9 years ago

Building a new house & I've been STUMPED for weeks on the kitchen countertop!! Our kitchen floor is a beige-ish porcelain tile wth some light creams running through it, tiniest amount of grey veins. Island is a dark brown (oak wood with buckboard finish) and the wall cabinets are an off-white (French vanilla is the exact name). Stainless steel appliances.

3 options are:
Ganash granite(1st pic)

Berwyn cambria quartz (2nd pic)

Laneshaw cambria quartz (3rd pic)

The pictures I took in bedroom lighting.
I am LOSING MY MIND over this!!! PLEASE PLEASE opinions!?!? I'm really starting to wish we didn't pick our floor before the countertops

if anyone has any suggestions to other countertops - PLEASE! - I would love to hear!!

First one given the choices. Pulls in both tones. Defiantly not the dark one. Way too heavy.

Last one, the quartz It is the tightest/smallest pattern. The porcelain will have more movement and pattern and color variation than you may have imagined when fully installed.............bet on it. The others?? Far too busy. Might want to take a peek at Zodiaq toasted almond........lighter and perhaps better with the island

I like Ganash granite. I have Cambria & love it, but Berwyn looks olive against other samples & Laneshaw too much against dark wood sample. I understand Jan M's point but Laneshaw is so dark, I think it would look heavy w/ dark wood. But I'm homeowner, not pro w/ training in color, movement, etc.

You need to look at slabs, not samples. Sorry.

    In sunlight, preferably.

out of the three, I say the 1st one. I probably wouldn't choose any of them. I like your floor, but the counters might be a bit too much. Have you seen an entire slab of any of those stones?

Here is an example of a kitchen that has porcelain tile with some movement, but the counter is not very different..pretty subdue. You can see the counter if you check the other photos from the project

Thanks everyone for your input and comments!!

Choosing a countertop has been my biggest stress with this build so far! Also Im not really in love with any of the 3.

I have seen slabs of all 3 in the sunlight at a granite yard. Theres no way I could make this big of a decision off of a small cut off scrap lol. Too many hours I'd like to admit I've walked up and down the rows of a granite yard with my tile & cabinet samples.

I'm having a real hard time seeing the end result, even more so that our kitchen is just a framed room right now. It's so tough for me to close my eyes and picture it all there.

Without considering my tile - just going by the stone design itself, I love the slabs that have a lot of movement just on their own so I think that's why I'm tending to choose designs that do have a little more going on. I definitely hear & agree with what was said about a more subtle countertop with such a strong design in the flooring. I'm going to take a look at a bunch of more quiet/low key options!

Honestly I'm ready to give up this flooring & pop it in the bathrooms instead!

I really appreciate all the opinions!!

The flooring is nice and it would be beautiful in the bathroom. If you want movement in the counter, then go with a 'quieter' tile for the floor

Thank You! I guess I'm back to square one with this kitchen design :)

I like the second choice best -- but not with the floors.

I like the flooring tile; I'd get a plainish quartz counter.

I really like the first one (Ganache granite).

I would do a solid cream quartz. Your floors are beautiful, but I think these granites have too much variation, and I personally wouldn't want a dark countertop. You can use a solid cream colored counter, because you will have some sort of back splash to add interest between it and the upper cabinets. Just check the quartz sample carefully against the cabinets to be sure they look good together.

    Thanks for all your replies!

My favorite is the 2nd one as well (Berwyn) but I know it doesn't look perfect with the tile. I'm going to try & push for that in our bathrooms! :)

I like the advice about a solid/quiet counter top. I guess I always just thought solid counter tops were "boring" but looking at a few pictures I can see when everything is brought together that's not always the case! I also really like what was said about the back splash. I wasn't even thinking about helping it look less "plain" by making it work with the back splash, I'm glad that was brought up!

All these opinions are awesome, thank you!

Have you looked at Cambria Windermere?

I liked the Berwyn, but I think you'd like Windermere even better. Light brown with copper and charcoal marbling.

When we did our K reno, I liked the Windemere, but wife & CKD liked the Newhaven better. Guess which one we have! :-)

First is the best pic -- better contrast than #3 and better match to the undertones of the flooring than #2. Maybe a cream glass backsplash, to not add more pattern. Should be nice!

I LOVE the contrast with the first one; that's my personal choice hand's down...I realize I'm not the one who has to live with the choice though. Best of luck!!!

Your floor tile is beautiful! I love it! Initially I didn't see or pay attention to the movement but the pros saw that immediately. I can see that now and I would trust their advice. The nice people thing about a more simple countertop is that it looks so clean. The floor tiles look really elegant and high end.

I know this is a very old post did you end up going with the ganache granite? Asking because I am considering ganache and can't find much information about it.
