Lol, Laura, I found this thread after I did a search for "Cuban" because a neighbor asked me what I knew about a Cuban citrus (Shaddock?). I have to say, my very European husband LOVES a Cuban dish, "ropa vieja," so much so that I learned how to make it and after years of practice, he takes it to work often for potlucks and his coworkers all love it!

So Mike, Laura answered your question, now you must elaborate on your Spanish ethnicity, lol!!!!! : )

Thanks Figs! I love ropa vieja and cook it periodically. Our favorite here is "picadillo". I can certainly share a recipe...it's quite easy!

Laura, wow, is the recipe in Spanish? That's as authentic as it gets! I'm always up for learning Spanish dishes- especially when hubby and the kids love them!

Cool! Here you go!

Picadillo

Ingredients:

2 lbs of ground beef

1 onion

Green or red pepper

Garlic

One potato

Green olives (I use the ones stuffed with red peppers)

Raisins

Tomato sauce or chopped tomatoes

Salt and pepper

Cooking wine

Sauté ground beef until it's brown. I usually spoon some of the grease out. Then add chopped onion, garlic, and peppers. You could substitute the peppers with red roasted peppers. Add the tomato sauce (I prefer a can of chopped tomatoes), a little cooking wine (or water), raisins, olives, and chopped potatoes (very small pieces), salt and pepper.

Simmer until potatoes are cooked.

And enjoy your picadillo over rice (I've been using brown rice).

My my mom had it translated because she recently shared it with a friend!
