Impatients, bring in for the winter?

I have struggled with this in the past and mostly failed.
What is a good way to get them to survive and be larger plants when I place then back out
next in the spring?

Can I cut them back?
Do I remove all/some the soil and use potting mix?
They are now 8 months old and I have 4" square pots with trays which I would rather use but I do have 6" round pots w/o trays making for more work to move.

Of course, about 2 weeks ago, I discarded the perfect pots/trays for
these and now regret it. I can't save everything but why can I not
discard the garbage first? (:

I have a north-west picture window that gets quite a bit of sun during the winter.
