It looks like globemallow to me. Comes in different colors but most wild ones are orange.

I second "globe mallow." And I add: If it is a globe mallow, treasure it, but don't love it to death, and don't try to relocate it. It will reward you with pretty blossoms around March. Apricot-colored blossoms are most common, but maybe it will surprise you with white or shell pink or faint lavender or a rosy color. Enjoy it.

Thanks Marco. From your comment about not loving it to death, I assume that refers to what I read somewhere else about no regular watering? What would you recommend - water once a month if no rain? There was a spell this summer where we didn't have any rain for a long time and it started wilting pretty good, so I watered it and it perked back up. Other than that, it has just got water from our rare rains here (Phoenix). Would fertilizer also fall under the category of loving it to death? Thanks for your insights.

If it sprouted by itself, it will probably thrive on natural rainfall and naturally occurring nutrients in the soil. When bloom season comes around in late winter and spring, you'll see them blooming happily along roadsides in the most dreadful soil. I hope yours makes it through.
