New England Pie and its derivatives were designed for eating.But most of the orange winter squash that we call pumpkins were considered as decorative first. All of them, even the Atlantic Giant are edible, just lower on a flavor/texture scale.

I am a fan of the neck pumpkin which is like a giant butternut and I grow that large winter squash every year. I've also grown (and am doing again this year) the Musquee de Provence pumpkin, which can get to 20 lbs. The others are new-to-me.
