Forgot to say that I have no idea what it is made of. I don't think it's wood. Maybe some sort of resin. I know that will make it difficult to suggest what to do.

It's abt the weight of a medium heavy lamp base of the same size. There was a sticker on the bottom that said "Sullivan's" and made in China. Those are the only other clues I can think of to give.

I would make it the pedestal for a bird bath. If your hosta is tall enough to conceal more than its base, elevate it.

That might be the answer, tsugajunkie. It is a little small to be a standout piece.

Do you know what it's made of? If plaster, it might not hold up well outdoors.

If it's resin or ceramic, you could dry brush a lighter color (like beige or light gray; white might be too strong) over the high points of the sculpture:

house paint would hold up well outdoors. You could use leftovers to match your house, or buy a small "sample" jar at the hardware store.

use just a tiny bit of paint on a smallish brush (1" wide).

brush off excess paint on a scrap of paper,

starting in an inconspicuous spot, like the back or base, very lightly brush onto just the high spots of the statue, leaving the nice dark shadows in the deep spots.

Whitewashing would give you just the opposite effect, making the deep spots light and the "highlights" darker. That's just unnatural : ) .

Another option would be to paint it a lighter color (beige or gray, perhaps), let dry, then use a darker color like brown or charcoal, water it down, and apply sparingly. The dark color will accumulate in the deep spots and mostly run off the high spots.
