statue blends in too much

I found this at our local thrift shop and want to use it among my hostas. When I got it home, my first realization was that it needs to be on a pedestal so the faces can be seen. (You can't tell in the pic, but it's a candle holder and I'm sure it was on somebody's mantle.) I can probably find or put together a pedestal.

But my 2nd realization was that the brown color just blends in no matter where I place the piece. I think it needs to be lighter to show up better. I thought abt whitewashing it (not that I know how to do that) but I don't trust my judgement. I'm just not very good at imagining how things will look.

Suggestions? Needs to be pretty simple as I am new to crafty stuff like this.
