We need help with our kitchen design....please comment

We are re-doing a 17 year old kitchen. Rip and replace. We have one main wall (188" long w NO window) ending with a 48" angled (45 degree) wall to our sliding back door. We are planning for a large island for working/eating.

Our Great Room is directly across from the kitchen and looks directly into the 188" wall of cabinets. We like the thought of a Walk-In Pantry as we'd seen it at a friends and believe it will be a space saver. We would prefer symmetry and are considering a decorative look (like the additional example photo) above our cook-top and sink.

I don't like the double oven breaking up the counter flow. I would move it to the far right and move the range in middle of the sink and ovens. Is the angled pantry necessary? Also I would not have a cabinet over the sink.

Im not sure I would want my main sink across from my dishwasher and while that wall looks symmetrical the wall ovens right in the middle breaks up what could be a great run of counter space. can the ovens be moved over by fridge? is that a walk in pantry or just cabinets? also I wouldn't want my sink closed in like the hood over the range.

I'll ask the question that will eventually get asked, do you have a kitchen designer?

I agree that you should be consulting a KD but you don't need to spend too much $$ for someone to tell you how you live. That said, I see your update to the detail above and the picture for reference. Truthfully, I find this whole process funny as EVERY kitchen is different so its hard to believe there are rules. Take a look at all the photo's here on Houzz....no kitchen is the same! I think the way people live and work in their kitchen is very personal. Add that to the never ending battle of Fashion vs Function and it makes it increasingly difficult to get things exactly right. That said, common sense is important too.

I have done a very rough sketch for you of a different arrangement for your kitchen. I don't understand either "pantry" arrangement but my main focus was the "back wall" island and relative placement of sink, refrig and range top. Ovens secondary. We like to arrange the sink, refrig and range in close proximity since you travel between those items the most. Ovens generally less often. Part of the kitchen "triangle" for optimized usage. I'll explain after I post this humble very rough sketch.

I moved refrigerator to back wall end. Moved general sink to island along with dishwasher. Moved ovens to far end where refrig was. Used that dead corner for a pull out storage area and put two pull out pantry organizers in the remaining space. Didn't have good scale measurements so these have to be refined. Put the range top on the long wall roughly centered in that space. That arrangement will give you more of the look you showed in your "inspiration" photo. I would put a granite countertop on the island wide enough to give you seating on the outside edge. (need min of 12" and supports for granite). This creates a good work triangle and also a more visually interesting looking kitchen.

Mark - that sketch somehow rotated when posting, so here it is again, easier to see I hope.

Just a few things to think about - It's nice to have symmetry, but I wouldn't want anything bulky hanging down in front of a main sink. Over a sink you want the cupboards raised, not lowered, so you aren't splashing onto that ceiling or feeling closed in. You could go all the way up to the small upper cabinets. It also doesn't make sense to have a prep sink directly behind the main sink, where they can't be used at the same time. For the dishwasher, I wouldn't want to rinse dishes and then drip them across to the island to put in the dishwasher. In my opinion, one of the best things you can incorporate into a kitchen is a pull out trash/recycle bin. Paying for a kitchen designer can be well worth the cost so you end up with a kitchen that functions well for you.

This is not a functional design. You can achieve symmetry without every cabinet being exactly the same on each side with ovens in the middle.

Whats the deal with the angled pantry? It looks odd right there. How large is that walk in pantry? If it's not at least 4x6 it's too small for a functional walk in. If you want it, place it outside your work triangle- on the other side of the frig.

Agree w all other comments and looking at your plan I question the aisle spaces ( should be 48 min) and prep sink location (flipped to opposite end).

Might be a typo edward? But 42" between cabinets and appliance for movement is plenty adequate.
