Can you replace it ?

Rustoleum has a variety of metallic paints as does Martha Stewart (Home Depot). I would check what they have to offer. I used Rustoleum's hammered copper paint on my ugly floor tile countertops and I love it. It does smell pretty bad when it's wet, be warned!

Have you heard of Thomas' liquid stainless steel paint? That may work to tie in with your appliances. Bronze is the wrong color with your cherry cabinets. Faux painting or stenciling a tile"border" is an option, and a metal shop could make a custom cover for the hood also. Another option is to contact a cabinet resurfacing company for them to laminate a cherry finish on the hood as well.

I'm hoping that one of our community's builders can tell us that's safe, made of drywall --? Yikes. Sorry you got left with this. I'm a rustoleum hammered finish fan too. Or perhaps you can have a metal fabricator in to create something great. Or maybe a faux stone finish? (Not the kind out of a can, but professionally done using plaster/paint/glaze.) I think tile might have looked odd anyway. At least you'll end up with something no one else has!

Thanks everyone with your input I will look into some of the suggestions.. At one point the builder came in and has us come in as well and the hood was all rounded I actually liked it as it looked rustic and old then the assistant to the builder said I thought we were putting tile on bottom edge and I said I like it rounded as I like old looking things. Builder agreed with me but somehow I got talked into edges you see here to prepare it for tile. Well as you can see Tile would not be able to go around the side.. I faux finished the upper part.. and had a painting on bottom edge . Then the tile was added and it sorta took away from the tile behind the stove. So painted it solid on bottom.. I was going to use those letters to add some whimsy and write in that space Mangia Bene means eat well in Italian HELP I know it needs something and we cant take it down, inside boxed in area is all metal up and to the roof so it vents out. keep suggestions coming please !

The stainless steel paint sounds intriguing, which reminds me I've used Hammered Silver/Chrome spray paint on several items, from ceiling light fixtures to some great sandals/shoes I wear. I expected it to eventually peel off my shoes since they bend with every step I take. To my surprise, nothing has peeled off or changed over at least 8 years. So if you can't find the stainless steel paint, give hammered silver a try. It's very durable & would provide some visual consistency vertically with your stainless steel stove and not compete with your tiles or cherry cabinets. It's under $10 and easy to paint over when you're ready for a change.

my island cabinets are espresso as well as wall shelving I wonder about making the hood espresso as well since my upper cabinets are glazed with some black in them. All knobs and faucet is oil rubbed bronze and all my light fixture iron part is rusty or aged bronze . Will add pic of my other colors

these pics give you all idea of our style and color of shelves and island near the hood. Light fixtures are all sorta caramel in glass color and iron is rustic iron or age rubbed bronze

Iron wood I am going to try a faux finish I beleive. Yes it does have a metal liner inside the wood construction under the dry wall. Vents out through roof. I love the idea of the venetian plaster.Any more ideas keep them coming . The hood has a texture on it but could be heavier I think.. This hood was inspected before the finish of the newly built house all was fine.

I love the idea from project guru of stenciling. You can even stencil a tile look or a fleur de lis design. Something simple that doesn't compete with the decorative tile below. I think it would be more unique than the initial tile plan since you already have so much beautiful tile and accents.

hey linda I had handpainted olive branches on it before with the black olives I am a painter and liked it and most people did but then a few said the olive branches seemed to take away from the glass tile so I listened to them and painted it plain

I did end up painting the bottom the color you see in the pic above its a true bronze it says when I had it mixed at home depot. It has alot of that gray in it you see in the tile but seems flat to me. Husband loved it so did a friend. I think it needs a bit of clear glaze over it

I am a big fan of Sherwin Williams faux finishes They have one that is Quartz Stone. You would be able to have almost infinite color choices and make it look like the high end ones that kind of look like stucco. I also really like their metallic finishes too. And hey, in the end, it's paint so you can change it any time you want a new look.

I am not sure on the color I painted it Cindy thanks for the advice I take all ideas to heart and wil go up the street and check out Sherwin Williams and see what they have. I am used to mixing glazes so they night have one I like better thanks so much

I wish I could sand down the sharp edges I think I would like it better with soft edges. I see the guy working in a house across the water from me he built it . I might go over and nicely ask him if there is away to soften up the hard edges would rather see it more rustic looking

Diann, you can soften the all the accessible corners with a bullnose corner bead if/when you re-plaster.

Drywall comes in different thicknesses. If you still wanted tile you may be able to have it redone in something thinner so it would fit? It depends on what they used in the first place.

Most of our wall edges are bullnosed as well as our granite I think this would work nicer on the hood more rustic look to it as well. I have espresso stained shelves and island in kitchen wonder what the hood would look like in that color

Talk to the plasterer about reworking the corners with the side cabinets in place. It may be easier to do without the impinging cabinets. Please let us know how things progress!

Ironwood will see the builder of the hood he is working a new house near us maybe he would come over and check it out when he has time.

I almost have your kitchen. Same cabinets, counters ... Except I painted the walls a light warm gray pulled from the stone.

My advice is to match your cabinets on either all or part of the hood to bridge between the cabinetry or match your stainless appliances to bring the eye up.

You mentioned you were a painter ... Think of it in terms of a good composition: Isolated shapes and/or color will look jarring and disjointed.

gray sounds so nice. My walls are ecru in kitchen and muslin in adjoining areas . Thanks Michele . Funny on canvas I am fine but this area has me stumped. I guess mainly because the hood was not made to my liking yet building a house in this past year has made it so at this time I cant do a whole lot about it except paint . I would have loved to have one of those stone hoods or aged copper but that was way out of our range due to all the other upgrades we made for the new home. Our granite is beautiful lots of rich colors , dark browns coppery colors and creams in it as well as tads of gray

I have to say, I did paint a door a faux copper and it came out spectacular (at my old house, not sure if I have pictures). Nobody knew until they touched the door. I didn't use a kit, I did it with some brownish coral paint, deep brown and ready made copper glaze.

Have you considered copper leaf?

I found one! We had just bought the place. It had an old, wood, teal door storm door (yuck!) and solid wood door. I couldn't stand it and this was my interim solution. We eventually replaced the old doors, redid the roof, gutters, porch rails, storm windows ... and turned around and sold the place when done. The old house was beautiful when we left! The mailbox to the left of the door was used as a reference, that is actually copper. This was away back in 2009.

What this looked like when we left ... the buyer got a beautiful home with nothing left to be done.

love it you did a great job. Our last house we had we did a lot the new people got a much better house than the one that was built for us. GOOD Job

Diann, my wife and I are remodeling our kitchen. It's going to be a complete gut job. It appears we share the same taste in cabinets and colors. It looks like you selected Waypoint Cabinets in the exact color scheme (with espresso island) that we plan to have installed. I just wanted to ask how you like the Waypoint Cabinets in terms of quality and longevity? Any problems? I'm very excited I found the pictures of your kitchen in the exact color choices we have made, it's a tough decision until you actually see it and your pictures help a ton!

I'd do a simple faux treatment on the whole thing...keep it simple looking and relevant to the background. I would not do a sprayed metallic. That will look like a cheap robot is on your wall. You need elegance.

For our office we made one out of drywall. I took SW Terra Brun paint, a copper metallic paint, SW French Roast paint and a black paint and faux painted it to a aged copper. Then put a clear coat on it. It is flanked by cherry cabinets although our are darker than yours and they have a black glaze on them.

I've handpainted a vine on a hood, as the client did not want to replace it. Stencil a simple design in bronze, or dark gray, maybe faux background first.

What about Venetian plaster in a color that would blend with your backsplash tile? They would be able to round the corners when they do the plaster.

Spray or sponge roll in hammered paint.
Bronze or pewter...your choice.

Braden Kitchens a local company south of us they work with our builder I am not sure the name of the cainets but were very happy with them the quality is very good , their a upgraded cabinet I know that. I did faux paint the upper part of our hood and ended up painting the lower part espresso to tie it in with our island , and shelves on wall . In the glass tile behind the hood is a dark color as well in some of the tiles so it seems to work well. This all doesnt mean lol that it will stay this way.. I would like to paint something or stencil something in the mid section of the hood to tie even more of it together.. Just rolling ideas around. I like it simple as well. Would have liked to do the vanetian plaster for sure still will talk to the builder of the island and see what he comes up with . Lots of building is going on in our neighborhood its tough to pull him away unless I am lucky enough to get him before he leaves

just get special paint and paint it black...don`t over complicate it!

I think the best idea would be to have the hood paneled in the wood as the cabinets - then the tile backsplash would pop and make the hood less obtrusive

yes I would have loved to have had it covered in wood eventually but right now can't . I love having no microwave above with vent that would go no where. I have my microwave in a drawer my favorite thing . We all love it there.JM584 IF YOUR gutting your kitchen you might want to think about getting a sharp mircrowave in the drawer its fabulus and out of the way too. So conventient.

yes I like that. i actually wanted my hood to be more old world looking thats why I didnt do it in beginning but this does look really nice. I was sorta wanting to do something out of the ordinary .

Diann, Please post an updated photo of your hood. I want the soft edges and old world look as well but am fearful I will end up with a boring cheap box. I hope the framer and faux person are true talented artists..
