The kitchen sink

The kitchen pictured below is in the house we just bought and will renovate. I was thinking of getting a Kohler stages 33 and I didn't really want an apron sink, but I should at least consider keeping the existing sink. Any comments on the practicality of a sink like this? It is 37" wide, just shy of 8" deep, double bowl. I currently have a 29" wide, 9" deep SS single bowl.

You always have such great vision for your places and I wouldn't bend your vision to keep this sink.

Personally, I love my large single basin sink and wouldn't choose a double. However, swapping that out for a stages looks to involve the cabinet,, new counter and backsplash repair.

That looks like an IKEA Domsjo. Nothing particularly special about it; I read that people love them except for cleaning out the ridges on the back. http://m.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/spr/69158173/

What does "renovate" mean for this kitchen? Will you be replacing everything? I would not want a double sink like that, and I think as far as apron sinks go, that one is not as attractive as others. So I would definitely want to replace.

Personally I would choose a Kohler Prolific over a small stages sink. It has a bigger bowl and it can be used in a similar way to the Stages. I'm assuming that cabinet is 36" and it would fit in fine if you could either get taller doors or a false drawer panel.

Thanks everyone! I feel guilty about not using perfectly good things like that sink.

But the entire kitchen is being gutted. I will reuse most of these cabinets in a large laundry room we are doing in the basement. Maybe I can use this sink down there, although 8" isn't very deep for a laundry/utility sink.

I will find it a good home and ensure it doesn't go into landfill somewhere. That will help with my guilt, a bit at least. ;)

Thank you for the tip about the prolific, I will look closer at it.

Going from a large single to a double bowl will take some adjustments. You always live with the double bowl for a little bit to what it is like. If you are renovating the entire kitchen, don't settle on the sink. The sink is used so much! With the double bowl, you will not be able to wash large pots/pans/cookie sheets as easily. I use to have to wash those things on my kitchen counter with the old sink. We donated our old sinks to Habitat for Humanity. Good luck!

I would go ahead and rehome the double apron sink (I agree it looks like an IKEA domosjo).

I would not choose a stages 33 for my main sink. I have the stages 45 and love it, but I wouldn't want the smaller bowl of the 33 as my clean up sink. If you can make room for a 45, I highly recommend it.

Sell that baby on craigslist. If it's in good condition, around here it would probably go for at least $150. Alternatively, maybe you have a Habitat for Humanity ReStore?

Habitat for Humanity so no guilt then.

I would totally use it for a laundry sink.

Somebody would be thrilled to find on craigslist or Habitat ReStore so it should go to a good home and you get what you want.

They probably installed that sink because it goes from the front of the sink all the way to the backsplash, not many sinks do that. So you are replacing the countertop and cabinets too-correct?

If it is the Ikea one, it is fireclay and retails around $330. Yes, someone will be thrilled to get it.

Thank you everyone, I think we have a consensus!

We just took possession of the house this week - it was sold as is. Just over there tonight going through the basement - there is ANOTHER identical IKEA 37" sink down there, uninstalled! Plus an entire white IKEA kitchen, uninstalled, granite, appliances and all. PO was planning on building a separate apartment down there. I need to figure out what it is worth and sell it or donate to habitat for humanity.

practicalgal, yes, the kitchen will become a bit bigger, layout will change and we will have to change everything. The cabinet boxes are good quality, not high end but good. I may look into reusing the boxes, but probably it won't make sense.

Crl, I will definitely consider the 45" Stages too. Instinctively I feel it is too big, but I know it effectively becomes the main prep space.

I would not go back to the double bowl sinks and wish I could trade out the double in my RV for a big single. If you have a Nextdoor neighborhood forum /app for your area it is a fabulous place to post your stuff for sale and you are dealing with the people in the neighborhood so very easy to pick up etc. So much better than dealing with Craigslist .

Actually, you can replace the sink in an rv. Look for one just for an rv or a mobile home. I saw several single bowls when I "googled".

I think Craigslist would be a good idea . Also- if there are any donation centers locally- if your budget doesn't need the help.
