Thanks for your response Mike. I imagine if I was to use it as gravel mulch I would have to soak/rinse it several times to make it safe for plants.

As to my process, all materials are newly purchased, I added only enough water to clump (no drips when squeezed) and I kept mold in plastic bag outside under cover for 2 weeks, checking daily for moisture (I live on Vancouver Island so lots of rain). Night time temps have been around 10 celsius.

Sounds like you are doing the process correctly and if I am converting to Fahrenheit correctly it appears to be warm enough. Not sure what to tell you.

I have used 1/1/1 , and that ratio has been good for me. Consider adding a little more water, so that you get a few drips. As it gets colder, it may be best to wait till spring, anything below 50 F will impact the curing process.

Mike, thanks so much for that response and the link to your blog and instructions. My friend and I have been wanting to try hypertufa for a few years but have been afraid to. I think I will talk her into it now!

Make sure that your peat moss is bone dry, maggiepatty. I think that was a big part of my problem.
