How is the taste? It is nice to know that maybe some of the later ripening apples could survive colder temps than I thought possible. It would be worth it next year to let them hang longer and see.

Taste is pretty good.. [like a good apple] not as sour then last time but still not a wow apple like Norkent. Yes...being this tough makes me thinking that it might stay longer into winter....I'm always looking for apples like this, even if not ripening but just for wildlife sake. Some are still on for this test. The wood still might freeze in a cold winter.

I have a small Pinova, no fruit yet, but I also have a mystery apple that could have hung on longer if I hadn't been so afraid of the frost. I only had one so I picked it, next year I think I will let it go until the temps. actually drop. This year I picked just because it snowed, not because it was cold. Live and learn.

WOW..picking apples in December, [Pinova]..still good to eat, the core is starting to brown a little. Survived minus 10C several times, will pick most early next week since a deep freeze is our way..minus 28C by Thursday. Seems tougher then any ornamental crabs..these froze solid and mush now.

Incredible, and wonderful news Konrad thanks for the update. I wonder if some of the other late apples would hold as well. This is something I will remember to do next year. Leave a few hanging ( assuming I get more than one) and see if it manages to do well. Let us know how long it stores, especially since it went thru -10C. One assumes, ( wrongly I guess) that no apple would be able to survive those temps. once let alone twice without getting mushy.

Well...made some desert..beyond eating fresh. Sunday night in the dark I picked most, they were solid frozen like a rock! Thawed out over night and yesterday my wife sliced them up and boiled for about 20min. with a little honey. Strangely enough, they held firm and still a little crunch when you ate them. Wife said they taste like pear. For me it was a honey apple.

gotta love it! Fresh apple taste in December, how good is that! The warm weather has me on edge though, I like it, but I am afraid of what it means in the long term.

Did you wrap the fruits to keep away insects and birds?

No...we're still good without but seems not for much longer anymore, apple maggot we have but some cultivars they leave alone.
