What a pain. We only have pocket gophers. This afternoon I bought some 1/2 price Asiatics at Home Depot and I think I'll cut the bottoms out of some 1 gal. pots and bury them in those. Grrrr.

I feel your pain! We have really aggressive squirrels around here and they do go after lily bulbs along with tulips, crocus, and they dig up just about anything I plant fresh - even if they don't eat it. Iris, echinacea, hosta, heuchera, dicentra - nothing is sacred! Tell me, you're in Illinois; have our southern Ontario black squirrels migrated to your area? They're a melanistic morph of the Eastern grey squirrel (also fox squirrels though ours are mostly Eastern greys) and they tend to be complete thugs.

I sympathize. I planted some tulip bulbs inside my fenced in veggie garden, because the deer love them so much they usually get eaten. I figured they would be safe inside the fence. The other day I went out there to see if they were coming up, and I found many of them were dug up and scattered around. I assume squirrels must have gotten in there and done the damage. Sometimes even a fence isn't enough. It's a constant battle for me, fighting off all the hungry wildlife.
