Squirrels dug up lilies for the first time ever ?!

For the first time, I have had squirrels dig up and eat 3 newly planted lily bulbs. I found the holes this morning, one with a couple of stray scales lying on top. This is the first time that’s happened. Tulips, crocuses, and known squirrel candy I always cover with wire mesh pinned to the ground after planting. But I’ve never needed to do it with lilies. They were 2 LA lilies and an oriental. $$. I wonder if those smell differently. They left the asiatics alone. But those were planted in a different area.

I thought lily bulbs were poisonous or distasteful to animals?? Similar to allium bulbs. They did dig up and take a bite into some hyacinths. Like a test taste, then dropped them.

Now that I know, I’ll protect the rest of the lilies with wire mesh. But it’s still infuriating. Those were not cheap bulbs!
