I first saw an Arroyo sweetwood tree at the San Antonio Zoo over 20 years ago. I was fascinated by it's graceful form. I wrote to the zoo horticulture director and asked him what the tree was growing by the aardvark pen. He wrote back telling me the tree had only been discovered a few years previously growing on mountain sides in Northern Mexico. He enclosed some seeds! I was thrilled! The seeds I send out are from the trees grown from those seeds.

Can you tell me if I need to cold stratify the seeds, or just plant them fresh?

You are very welcome. I'm just 'paying it forward' as the horticulture director of the San Antonio zoo did for me. I still have the original envelope with his name stuck in one of my gardening books. Every once in a while I come across it, but don't remember right now which book it is in.

I think they'd do fine just planted fresh next spring, but if you wish to do so you'll have enough to experiment with.

I've been following many of your posts/comments, it appears you've been at this awhile, and have just a tad bit of knowledge and experience under your belt. I can say for sure at least 20 years, cause you said it was 20 years ago that you got some arroyo sweetwood seeds. But I have a funny feeling you've been at this many years prior to that. I'm quite sure you have many beautiful specimens in your collection, and I'm sure you work very hard tending to your beloved specimans. And yes, paying it forward brings out the goodness in you and your willingness to share!
