LED lighting?

We need to decide asap on using LED lighting in our renovation for our downlights. Thoughts please? The only negative I have heard is that if not installed properly there can be a buzz.

Thanks,

Susan

It's awesome. We have LEDs all over the place and they are a true win-win. Go for it!

LEDs are the best. You won't regret it.

This is a well discussed topic here - perhaps you could use the search box and type in "LED lighting" and look for results in the home forum. Not everyone loves them, but I think you'll find that most people do. Good luck.

We installed the Juno LED mini-track light system in November 2015 in our MBR. Love it. Quality of light is beautiful, love the mix of PAR16 and PAR20 bulbs - gives us floodlights to highlight certain areas and general diffused light for everyday.

So much less energy used for the total wattage, too! A win-win all the way around.

We have older 6" recessed lights in our kitchen. Replaced those with LED floodlights too. Interestingly, I ended up with two different brands - FEIT and TCP. The TCP were VASTLY SUPERIOR flood bulbs to the FEIT. We were very surprised at the difference between them. I gave the FEIT bulbs to Goodwill.

One of the things I like about incandescents is that they get warmer as you dim them, but that's not generally something that LEDs do. For our can lights and the globes of the dining room fixture, we got Philips Warm Glow bulbs that DO warm down from 2700k to 2200k. I like that a lot. No trouble with buzzing, but we did get vintage-looking push-button dimmable switches that don't dim down as low as the Lutron ones before going off.

@AvatarWalt If you want a warmer LED, you can always invest in Philips Hue lights or similar alternatives. You can set their color, even different hues of white. We are putting Hue lights in all the can lights and using Hue Lightstrip+ under the upper cabinets. I can change them to different colors like blue or green or change them to different hues of white to increase warmth ect. A little pricey, but if you pay attention, use coupons, ect they can be okay in price.

The buzz isn't due to poor installation, it is from incompatibility between the dimmer and the bulb. With the price of LED trim kits having come down so far and so fast, there really is no reason I can think of not to get them over incandescent.

I switched out 95 ceiling flood lights and am very pleased. The best price I found was at Costco. Keep some paperwork. They have a long warranty and they do not last as long as they claim. Out of the 95 that I purchased about 6 years ago, I have had two fail.
