Winter Fertilization

Hi All,

I have a question about the winter fert application. I'm wanting to wait until the week of thanksgiving but i have a good rain storm coming Wednesday/Thursday of next week and was thinking of getting the fert down this weekend and let that water it in.

I'm in Central MA, what are your thoughts? Should I wait longer and possibly do the weekend of Thanksgiving?

Has the grass stopped growing yet? The only thing magic about the Thanksgiving date is that it's easy to remember. You should let Mother Nature tell you when to apply the fert. Apply after it stops growing but before it goes dormant, if it goes dormant.

how long of a window (average is fine) would you say there is between it stopping growth and it going dormant?

I have KBG and while i'm not sure if it has stopped growing, its certainly not growing a lot if it still is.

Once the ground freezes no nutrient including N is going to be used by the plant. Try to get N down shortly after the grass stops growing or significantly slows and at least 2-3 weeks before ground freeze.

Temps are temps are looking to stay around 40 for the low for the next 10 days so it seeems like I should wait. Good amount of rain coming next week, hopefully I get more after I apply to wash it in, irrigation is already shut down

I must have phrased that poorly.

    Put the winterizer down now.

    Hey there,

Im in Worcester and 'I'll be throwing down the winterizer this weekend. I generally find thanksgiving to be a bit too late here, ground is often frozen over by that point (except for last year when I was mowing in December!) My grass is mostly done growing for the season and it's your standard kbg/fescue/rye mixture.

Are you under a water ban as well? I've had to be a bit more flexible with my timing for applications as watering in isn't an option at this point.

Thanks, I am under the watering ban which is why i wanted to catch next weeks storms to water it in, not sure what rain would look like after that before the ground freezes.

I went and put it down this weekend, I think the grass is done growing so lets see what it does. We should be getting half an inch of rain tomorrow so it should get watered in well.
