Rug advice

Hello! I've been looking for a flat weave rug to go in my hallway. This is our entryway into our modern townhouse. The floors are polished concrete and the rest of our house is modern but a little eclectic. We are getting ready to install some white cabinets with a wood counter and wood shelf above to display art (and store things below) at the end of the hallway. I bought this Skyline rug from Rejuvenation to add a bit of color and warmth without distracting too much from our art and cabinet display when it is finished. I love the rug but am not sure if it works with the striped walls and would love some other opinions. Thanks!

This is where the cabinets will go.

I like it, too, but it looks too traditional for your space. I think a more modern rug with blocks of bright colors would work better.

The pattern and the tones look great with the floor but not with the stripes. If you like that type of pattern, I think it might work if it were more monotone.

I also think something fresh and modern would look great or something plain and natural with lots of texture.

    Your hall looks great!

What what do you guys think about this one?

Are your walls gray or blue?

The walls are Ben Moore Gray Owl which is gray but definitely has greenish bluish undertones in my house. I actually kind of like its chameleon-like nature.

I like the style of your current rug. I don't see it as competing with the wall stripes at all, and like the different scale of the print. It's not too much color, but just enough to add a touch of warmth which is what you're after. If you wanted a change, you might consider looking for something similar in style but perhaps with darker tones. I'd still want it muted though. I believe bright colors will be jarring.

Thank you IdaClaire! I like the muted colors too. When my husband saw it he exclaimed "it's so pale!" But he is literally colorblind so light colors just look gray to him.

I love the runner but it seems a little too traditional with your cool, modern vibe. I like the last picture with the doggie, a warmer color in the middle bound with a cooler tone. It's modern and yet adds some warmth.

I agree with nosoccermom--once you go down that monochromatic path, it is very difficult to find a rug with a lot of colors that works. (Although, there are for sure some out there--but they are much more difficult to find.) I was also thinking that you should stay with a gray/white rug. And definitely modern!

Thanks all! I kind of like the idea of a warm natural colored rug but fear my husband will revolt as the only reason he's agreeing to a rug at all is because he likes the idea of adding color. Maybe I'll ease him into the idea after adding in some colorful art on the shelves once they've been installed. Once again you have all been helpful!

My first thought was something neutral that blends with what you already have going on, so I don't feel that the current runner is great (it would be OK tho). But the bright, modern triangles is definitely fun and I might go for it.

I would add the wood shelf first.

However, if you google striped hallway, you'll see that a lot of them have wood floors, so a natural rug would not only add texture but basically that wood color.

Or a boldrunner in orange, blue, green, yellow. although I'd probably go relatively solid

Thanks! I think I've decided to keep the rug and use it for winter because it feels like a cozy sweater to me. And since it will be easy to switch out, maybe I will get a seagrass rug too and use it in the summer. I'll update this weekend after we get those boxes unpacked and cabinets installed! Thanks everyone!

So odd, in your first pic the rug looks much more colorful. In the second pic, the gray that works with the stripes seems more prominent. I guess the lesson is to take all our internet advice with a grain of salt because we will never be able to see everything that you see. Looks great. Enjoy your cozy rug :)

Looks like a great plan. The wood will warm it up even more.

And if you wanted to, you could even switch out the black/white art with gold frames and/or colored art.

d_gw, that was my reaction! In the first photo, I thought the walls looked green and the rug rather maroonish. In the second, I thought they looked great together, and with the floor.

I also think it looks better in the second pic. It would be interesting to see the frames like nosoccermom suggested.
