Hi Andrew, it would help if you would let us see what the bulb looked like, top and bottom. until then, it sounds like it is being kept too wet especially since it has no roots. I would take it out of its pot and let it dry completely. Hopefully some of the basal plate, bottom, is still healthy. If that's gone, the bulb is gone. I have saved a badly damaged bulb, with basal plate, by putting it in sphagnum Moss, damp not wet, in a plastic bag with warmth. But let us see a pic first.

I don't know where you live, but wondering why the bulb's been dormant for 6 months. In the northern hemisphere, bulbs should have been growing vigorously all spring and summer, then dormancy in Oct/Nov to attempt winter blooms. In the Southern Hemisphere spring is well underway and the bulb should have been growing for a couple of months.

If they are fungus gnats, cut back on the water and put down 1/4"of fine clean sand on the top of the soil.

can i just let it dry on a dry rack type of thing or do i do more

Here is a picture it is kinda a small bulb I took it out of soil and cleaned it off and dried it it is now on a rack to dry I cut all the dead roots off I found a kinda deep hole about half inch deep do you think it has a chance of surviving

It looks like it may have been attacked by the dreaded NBF. I've had this happen many times and they leave a pretty decent hole behind. Did you notice if there is a larva inside?

If it has enough of a basal plate, you can try to clean out the dead tissue as best you and apply some rooting hormone with fungicide, then let it dry for a few days. Pot it up in some fresh soil but i would keep it on the dry side until you see some signs of growth. Do like Donna does and pot it in a clear Dunkin Donuts iced coffee cup, that way you can see the roots develop and that would be a good sign that your efforts paid off.
