Design Dilemma

Having problems with furniture and the lay out of this room. It's roughly 20 x 16. Somewhat awkward layout, but I'm trying to work with it.

Nice room! First thing I notice is the art over the sofa is placed too high and it's too small for that space. You need something at least twice that size. Art should be eye level. You shouldn't have to look up to see it.

Is there a coffee table you could use? Maybe move the chairs forward a bit, add a rug and a coffee table or ottoman? what is the white railing?

If that white railing is something that can be moved, I would float the sofa facing the fireplace, and put one chair on either side facing in. If it is something permanent, I would still face the sofa to the fireplace and put both chairs on the side where the sofa is currently. The room is unbalanced as is.

The railing is definitely movable. It's a puppy play pen. The painting is my favorite but I agree it's not large enough for the area.

Also, if you look at your pictures here, do you see what I see? I think the kitchen walls should be another color…maybe a deep turquoise?

I think a deep color in the kitchen would add a lot to the feel of the living room and you could bring a bit of that color into the living room. Pillows on the pale sofa(s) would be a nice segue.

you need a light rug, can that art be moved to a better spot? move the sofa off the wall and on to the rug. What a gorgeous home!!! I love the blue idea

This type of setup might be ideal for your space. The image is one of our design projects. Notice the rug and how all the furniture is pulled forward, towards the middle of the room?

found this.. the idea is about the same. I bet that this guy could have gone to the Dollar Tree, bought 7 identical frames, find some cool black and white images and they don't have to be large if you have the matt cut right. NO family photos, I always thought people you know ( your grandma for instance ) don't belong in your bed chambers. It's like they are watching you...

Maybe you like your recliner facing the tv; if so, you'd prefer not to move it to another location. Sometimes we place furniture totally for comfort, not visual good looks!
