Redo needed for tabletop

I've been trying to hire someone to cover this table top with laminate. After 2 years
of hearing "no I can't do that" I need some suggestions. I want to have the top
exposed, not covered with a tablecloth. If I have the wood refinished, it will not be respected in my household and I'll be back to square one. I like the size, the drop leaves and can overlook it's age. Any comments appreciated.
