Alternative clay medium

Hi there! Due to my horrible experiences of using organic medium such as bark, coco husk, and sphagnum moss to my orchids, I am now thinking of switching few of my collection to inorganic medium by using clay. Unfortunately, I have no convenient way to buy some. Here in Philippines, clay pots are pretty much abundant and affordable. That's why breaking those pots into small pieces and sterilizing it to replace clay pebbles came to my head. However, before I do this 'ridiculous' idea, I just wanna know your opinions or suggestions to make this successful. Will the small pieces of broken clay pots work similar to clay pellets? And what other things should I consider in using clay as a medium for orchids? Thanks!!!
