Recesses are quite standard and any good contractor should be able to handle the carpentry and tiling. I wouldn't recommend a shower to be where anyone learns to tile, due to the issue with waterproofing and all the necessary cuts and angle....small plain backsplash would be a better place to learn.

The #1 problem with tiled shower recesses that I've see here on Houzz is failure to plan the whole shower layout so the tiling will fit and look balanced. Using the same field tile is usually best, AND that means your carpenter has to size and locate those recesses just right. Not a skill that comes naturally or intuitively. Bad jobs can look dreadful, search for examples.

#2 shower issue is lack of proper waterproofing in construction. It runs counter to many people's intuition, but tiles and grout do NOTHING to waterproof the shopwer....it's all the invisible materials that protect your joists (and the downstairs ceiling if present) from rot and decay. Good luck!
