Your furniture is brown wood. I think you can have any color you like.

I think the curtains need to go.

I'd say something light. Your furniture is all dark, so you need to lighten that room up a bit IMO. I would do a warm cream, very light shade of what you have, or a warm, light beige IF you don't like current color.

Also I think if you got some light patterned curtains it would really help for the brightness of the room. And not to mention the interest of the room.

Regardless of wall color, I do think curtains need to be changed (or removed if not vital). If you change wall color to a neutral, I'd do curtains w color in them. Maybe coral!

I would say sherwin Williams colonnade grey or alabaster. I think they will really help play off the beautiful dark wood and lighten the room up

The curtains are the first thing I noticed about this room. They are weighing it down and are not the right style for your type of furniture. If you focus on replacing them your color issue may resolve itself.

I would do a really soft sage green , I don’t mind the drape color and I usually don’t mind a bit of puddle in a formal space but in this case i would hem the drapes a puddle does not work with the tab top

I kinda like the curtains (Patricia, they appear to be on rings, not tab top). A soft warm green would be my choice for color. Any chance you could get crown molding installed in this room? I think it would look wonderful.

The hutch is old style and the console is very contemporary. If the hutch were a light colored one the curtains wouldn't look so bad either.

The hutch was my grandmother's, so I don't want to change it. I can, however, change the console table and the curtains. I think everyone may be right about the curtains being too heavy looking. Thy are lined and very substantial in weight. A lighter colored curtain with a pattern may be a great answer! Regarding the paint color, I forgot to mention that the kitchen that is next to the dining room is done in Benjamin Moore Cream Fleece. The family room on the opposite side of the kitchen is Benjamin Moore Baby Turtle. I'll attach pictures below in case that impacts anyone's color recommendations.

I comment you for your choice of paint color; love it. I would add new upholstered end chairs in a transitional print.

After getting new upholstered end chairs I would remove all the stuff in the room and edit. I would put two of the side chairs on either side of the aisian table and find a large piece of art to go over the table. (This could balance the weightier buffet on the opposite wall). And the art piece could provide new olor inspiration as well.

Add two tall buffet lamps on the aisian table. Ballard Design has some terrific skinny tall lamps and you can choose your lamp shade and they are designed for a buffet/side table. Also budget priced.

Consider raising your curtain rod to the ceiling and expanding it one foot on either side of the widows; you might also want a brass curtain rod; up to you.

Your chandilier looks a bit high; if your ceiling is 8 feet tall then the chandelier bottom should be 30 inches above the table; if the ceiling is 9 feet tall the chandelier bottom should be 33 inche above the table.

Try those things first. Remove stuff, find large art work, move two side chairs, and get new pair of hosts chairs in a print that incorporates wall color and curtain color.

Of course if you really want to repaint, I think any color would work as long as the new color is found somewhere in another part of the house so things relate.

Included this pic as it has elements I think you room has. Also love the scale of these chairs for your dining room for end chairs. Large art, simple foyer pieces, and low key flowers on the table. The chandelier has simple what shades that you might consider for your chandelier; adds a softening effect for a different look. Just suggestions all around

PS I like your room colors! Can the hutch go in your more casual eating area! I looks like it would be a perfect match in that room and you would probably use is more every day? Or you could just flip the two dining sets with the spindle back chairs in the dining room that would relate really well to the hutch!

I really enjoy the tone of blue that @emmarene suggested. It really compliments the colour of your furniture, and gold accents. With that being said, it feels like a bolder choice of colour if that is the direction you want to go..But if you wanted to go more neutral, a grey would also be a nice choice. I also think that the curtains need a change. They make the room feel darker than it probably is.

I'm loving so many of your suggestions! Thank you so much! Now, would anyone advise painting the console table? Would that make it work better? The black feels a bit stark to me with the other wood tones.

The table has some Asian flare, so deep red enamel would look fab, but that depends on the wall color you finally choose.

Love that idea deco....maybe she/he could reupholster the chairs in a white fabric w red pattern?
And of course change curtains. Yes and current wall color wouldn't work w this color scheme :/
