You need some art.

I would remove all the drapes and rods and install all natural woven shades..they will look great on the windows and can be installed above the slider door and rolled down for privacy...,will add a clean modern look to go with you sectional and rug...

That sounds like a good idea for the Windows. Do you have any pictures of what that looks like?

I think you need art you love, not art intended to go with the room. It can be anything. Photography. A Painting. A poster. A textile. Anything that speaks to you.

Here is some art that will bring in some color and movement...adding textured pillows to the space will look great.

I do think you could use a larger rug if it is in the budget.

lighting is very important and a accent chair would be great.

I do not have a particular art style, so I am wondering if anyone has suggestions. I am mostly looking for something that will look nice in the room.

Wall behind the couch isn't looking too wide, go with a square frame painting... or may be a small collage of smaller paintings. Go for something which is bright and colorful, your room needs a splash of color.

Thanks Ruchi! The space is about 8 feet between the windows so trying to decide if I should do one larger piece or a combination of smaller pieces. I agree that a splash of color should help a lot!

I would do one piece behind the couch. I like the one posted by Home Interiors. I would replace the ottoman with a coffee table. Again, I like the one posted by Home Interiors. A circular one would be a nice contrast to the blocky couch. With the size and number of windows, shades would look better. I would get a fabric roman shade in a solid color (as in not brown or white). Maybe a solid blue or green depending on what you choose as an accent color.

Can the rug be turned so it is wider than the sectional?

For curtains, you want them to hang longer, barely touching the floor.

I would do one large art piece

pull couch off the walls just a foot or so

table centerpiece keep simple perhaps a wooden long box you can change out contents seasonally

The rug is 8x10 so it is currently set to cover the most of the sectional.

The couch is pulled out about 10 inches or so, but it might be hard to tell in the pictures. I can walk behind it.

I do agree that I would purchase curtains that would touch the ground. I am on the fence about shades vs curtains if I am going to make that purchase though.

I think a mirror with a nice frame around it above your couch could be a great addition to your room! A mirror can also help make the room seem somewhat larger.

Centerpiece

Turn rug please and only put front legs of the wide back part of sofa on the rug. Remove ottoman.

I definitely think a good painting over the couch is the first thing I will add. If you have any paintings that you like with links, that would be very helpful. I am looking at a few right now, but nothing has jumped out to me yet.

Definitely switch to some blue drapes - that'll brighten things up for sure.

Since you don't seem particularly attached to any particular kind of art, maybe a large collage frame? Target has a lot of nice ones that aren't too expensive. You can fill it with photos of the people and things you like, postcards from places you've been, or just print outs of fashionable art. Best part is you can change out the contents whenever.

If you're looking for more standard wall art, maybe one of these? Something that brings out the subtle blues and yellows you have. Or something like this that comes in a few pieces that you can arrange.

This could also be really nice.

Here are the changes so far!

I would definitely change the curtains to a mono color instead of having patterns and designs on them. This would definitely make a difference to your living room.

1. B/c there is a door (I assume going out) put in place thin white curtains, boxed by a pastel color

2. The heavy curtains block lots of sun, try a similar approach to #1 or try roman blinds or a form of modern sliding blinds, again in bright colors

3. The rug contrasts starkly to the large sofa, the idea I had in mind was "summer-ish but warm", hence the pastel and modern blinds. The rug itself shouldn't be coarse nor too fluffy and the color can either contrast the blinds or compliment it: pastel blue blinds = light blue/ purple themed rug. I would try to cover the color of the sofa, again hatching colors or a fur or wool throw would be a good way to cover it
