It depends what tree form you want to end up with.

Is the tree in a pot or in the ground?

For me in ground figs zone 6 it is much easier to grow as a bush with multiple stems kept 2-3' high. This works great and produces max main crop figs.

Some fig trees will not produce their first year or two, but then I've seen some in the nursery/Home Depot with figs on them already. Fig production depends on a number of things and it sounds like yours put all its energy into growth (1 to 6 foot growth.) One thing you can do next year is tip it. After you have NEW growth of 6-7 leaves, pinch off (or cut off as the latex sap can be irritating) the tip of the growth. This will promote branching and also the formation of figs. If the tree cannot continue to grow up, the energy will go into fruit ('damaging' the tree by pinching it causes it to try and procreate.) Many people swear by pinching, I'm going to try it next year.

Pino I live in zone 7A in Virginia and it is currently in wheel barrel type pot. Thanks for your advice. I do not have a preference whether it is a tree or bush. I do not want it to get much taller. I just did not want to hurt the plant by cutting it back. Would it be okay to keep it in the pot or should I place it in the ground in the spring?

I am a newbie with figs so thanks for your advice. So to tip it I cut off the very top of the tree after I see the new growth you mentioned? How much do you actually cut.
