My monkey tail!

Oh wow! where did you get that from? I though you had a visitor! lol

Ahahaha....I bought it off of a lady from California. She sells them on fb. This one was $35. She had larger and smaller ones....it looks better in person. Feels like a real tail!!

Who is the lady? I'm in Calif, but I've never seen one of those. Ha...I may just have to get one now. So cool looking. Is it prickly? I assume it's some sort of cactus.

lydia you are shaming me! your GH is so beautiful! Mine needs some help right now, such a mess. Like you I have many succulents in my GH. I tried growing hoyas in there but found that the rats liked to eat them (well they especially liked one). My roof has gotten darker over the years and now limited light. So, thanks for your pictures and the kick in the mental butt to clean up my GH act :-)

My old little greenhouse had gotten dark like that as well. That's why I went with the plastic cover and the cattel pannels. The plastic should last from 4-6 yrs. After that I'll just order another one. The plastic.wasn't too expensive and the metal pannels aren't going anywhere....I hope I don't get any mice in there. I haven't seen any in my yard since we got a cat. I do see squirrels now that my pecan tree is bountiful. The bird's were my pests. They love ice plants and portulaca and yank out other succulents out of their pots.

Laura, I also had rats eating at my hoyas this past summer. I dont even know if i will put them outside next year if i dont get my green house.

Love it! Of course ...I for one don't mind that it isn't a hoya. I think almost all of us that keep hoyas, also keep other plants as well. I have a lot of tropical hibiscus, various succulents and rhipsalis, sansevierias, and a few caudex plants like pony tail palms. I used to keep a lot of cactus, but got so tired of picking out thorns and tiny little prickers out that I gave them up, all but for a thornless one and several small rat tail /hanging types. However, that monkey tail has me intrigued, and I now am in the process of getting one too. I love different and unusual plants. I love the looks of the blooms they will get too. Fun stuff.

That's my potting toadstool. Most of the time I just sit there (having my morning coffee) inspecting the baby hoyas for growth and tell them how beautiful they are lol....please tell me you talk to your hoyas too! Ha

That monkey tail is adorable! I absolutely love the odd and interesting (and hoyas, of course!).

Do you have any plants with caudexes (adenium) or any other oddities? I have an adenium arabicum, adenium obesum, some stapeliads and huneria, as well as a few epiphyllums, citrus, and orchids. And, of course, hoyas!

Would love to see them! Kinda dreary here in the PNW, and although a couple of hoyas are budding, it will be a few weeks before I see some blooms!

I have Haworthia, huernias, stapeliads, sansevieria, aloes, monadenium, adenium obesum which all are growing in the ground and lots of portulaca. Like you all I like the odd and rare. I love variegates.

Of course I talk to them. (Thinking of threatening them)...lol I like to touch and feel the leaves too. Someone said when you talk to them, you are giving the the carbon dioxide from your breath that they need. They in turn give us the oxygen.

Talking to them DOES seem to help them (although not really my fault, I still blame myself for killing my last attempt at H. bella...I used naughty words because I could NEVER make her happy)

Mairzy_dotes, did you get a monkey tail after all? There is another one on ebay... Mine seems to be a fast grower. I counted 6 new little tails forming.

ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!! That is about all I can say..I'll bet you love that place..Good for you! Now worries about frost or pests!

I have it hanging out in the open. Right on the edge of my patio. Gets a lot of sun and I like that it dries out quickly. I didn't keep it in the greenhouse for fear of it rotting. It was a little pricey plus I absolutely love it! It's my #1 :)

Is the macrophylla splash gonna live?

wow your madagasgar palm is HUGH for zone 9. I have 2 in pots and that really limits the size but I did notice that one has roots in the ground ;-(

I have now cleaned up the shade house and set out rat bait but the rats aren't eating the bait. I might have to put a little peanut butter on the bait. I want to get the roof changed out but I will need to hire someone to do that.

It is huge! Blooms all the time. This one, I bought it as a little seedling for $0.75. Planted it in the ground and it took off!...yes, change that roof. It's so worth it!

After seeing your greenhouse and plants, you are a woman after my own heart! We have the exact same taste in plants.

Those variegated Haworthia limifolia's are beautiful (as is everything else in your greenhouse)! I have a couple of them, too; one of which I bid on and won at the 1991 Succulent Plant Symposium held at the Huntington Botanical Gardens in California.

I also love the huge Pachypodium (is it lamerei?) and cactus that is planted in the ground, as well. I so wish I could grow stuff like that in the ground here in MN, but the plants just seem to have a really hard time withstanding the -40°F wind chills we get here (Go figure)!

Yep, we also have the same taste in plants. I notice that you have a sansevieria pinguicula. not too many people have that one.

Just lots of water! I'll move it to a better looking basket soon. Didn't want to interrupt it's growth spurt.

Lydia, that monkey tail is crazy cool! It looks like an animal lol. It's very interesting to see how much it's grown. Your greenhouse is very nice. The plants are beautiful, they look perfect! Not a leaf out of place. And the pachypodiums are insane too! I have a lamerei in a small pot that's not even a foot tall, I can't imagine it getting to that size. How old is yours?

My palms are around 15yrs old. Bought them as seedlings :) they took off as soon as I planted them in the ground....I can't believe how fast the monkey tail grew. I'm glad though. Looks killer as a full basket of tails!!

Wow, well they are a sight to behold! Your monkey tail did fill out nicely. I was wondering, what is that cactus next to the fence that was blooming its head off? It's beautiful. And do you have any epiphyllums, being a cactus lover? They're the only cactus that I have. I have 3.

It's a cereus peruvianus monstrous....I don't have any epiphyllums but I read that the care for monkey tail is similar.

It certainly is monstrous! It's huge. Lots of nice blooms too. Now if I get a monkey tail then I might know how to care for it. I have oxypetalum, hookeri, and a noid. Hookeri is about to bloom again. I can't wait for oxypetalum to get big enough to bloom, the night fragrance is supposed to be beautiful.

When will it have flowers?

I don't know. The seller told me to let it winter outside so it can bloom in the spring. Problem is that it doesn't get cold here too often. We will see what happens next spring. I think I bought it last Oct. Its not even a yr old yet :)

Wow! Lydia, your greenhouse is just amazing! All the plants are so HEALTHY looking! Are you near the El Paso area? It's supposed to be dry and a lot like my weather here in S. Calif. hi desert, only we get a little colder in winter. Down to 15-20F sometimes. I grew up an hour from here, where it never got below 40. Only a couple of frosts in twenty or so years. I assume your humidity is low too? Mine is sometimes in the single digits, yet it really IS possible to grow plants indoors here. At least, certain ones. I even grow a few orchids, and some with no pebble trays. My big croton doesn't have a pebble tray either, and none of mine go outside. Too dry--they'd get dessicated in one day, even if in the shade. That monkey tail is amazing, and I love variegated plants too. I was going to ask if anyone enjoyed spending time in their greenhouses, and I see that they do! I'd be out there a lot too if I had one.

I'm way down south in the Rio grande valley. I'm only 1 hour from South Padre Island. Its very humid here and the Hoyas love it! We get very mild winters here but once in a while we will go into the 40°s which is why we built the greenhouse. I love living in a tropical area!!...most of my plant are out of the greenhouse right now. Its been way to hot and noticed a few were declining in there. New cuttings like it but will only use it to over winter my plants from now on.
